Sheryl Crow (Of All People) Brains An Idea To Rival Radiohead's "Name Your Own Price"

Sheryl Crow isn't exactly giving away an album for free. She's giving her album away for free AND taking the "lazy" out of "lazy American voters."
The multiple Grammy winner is giving away 50,000 digital copies of her album Detours, released last February to the first 50,000 people who register three friends to vote. The genuine marketing ploy is a kickstart to Rock The Vote's voter registration drive.

"I hope people wake up and emotionally engage in issues," Crow told the AP in an exclusive interview about the drive. "Our music (now) is not representing the times — at least not socially and politically. Or maybe we're just distracted." Detours, however, touches issues like Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq War and breast cancer.
Crow's also coughing up a free download of her track "Gasoline" to anyone registered with Rock the Vote.
Marketing ploy or a genuine act to inspire? Your thoughts?

Good for her -- I already bought the CD, and am already registered to vote.
I think Sheryl has plenty of money at this stage in her career. I know some people don't like her, but I think her heart is in the right place. She's done more than a lot of stars on behalf of others.
Also, I like Detours - it's a little quieter than most of her previous music and it grew on me.
I gotta admit, I don't have Detours. So I was like, "Perfect. I'll get it for FREE this way." I went to the link to sign up and signed up and all, but then thought, "Do I really want to annoy my friends with more spam in their inbox? So I didn't do the register 3 friends thing. Now, I feel like I'm eating my own words. Does it make me lazy? I'm thinking I was being more along the lines of thoughtful. I just might go back and do but the 50,000, with my luck, will be gone.
That's very cool ... I already think she's hot, but now, she's even hotter! :)
and, yes, I'm lazy ... I'm not forward enough to hit up my friends (i'm fine with buying the cd)
Regardless of her intentions, the idea is phenominal....good for her/her people!
maybe she should start with Paris Hilton
It's in Rhapsody and I'm already registered, so I'm good. I do think her intentions are genuine though. Everytime I've seen her in interviews and such, she seems very down to earth and true to her convictions.
This is clever. I hope she's not preaching to the converted.
"Hey, I don't know politics and shit, but WHOA! Free CD!"
Just what this country needs. More morons in the voting booth.
@ dermahrk, I totally agree with you. Let's get a bunch of people who couldn't give a kidney bean to vote so they can get free stuff. Ugh.
