I'm walking…I'm walking so fast someone in a wheelchair wheels up next to me and asks me if I want to race. No joke. He thinks he's being really funny. I stop and laugh too. This is the pace I've gotten myself into at Lollapalooza 2008, trying to get from stage to stage to catch some of the 180 acts gracing the heart of Chi-City.

(Ting Tings on the AT & T stage)
The most important thing at Lolla, next to having a trusty festival guide, is being fully juiced up on your cell phone battery. Then its golf cart access via the "Festival Express," which can cut the 30 minute walk from the north end's Bud Light main stage to the south end's AT & T stage to about 5 minutes. (The Tings-Tings Katie White even got behind the wheel of one following their early Saturday afternoon set.) But if your cell phone is dead, you are going to miss important texts from pals informing you that one of the greatest guitarists of all time is about to grab an axe and jam at Perry's Tent, named for the festival's ambassador and former Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell.
Farrell and his wife's hour and half DJ set were plagued with sound problems, which at first seemed like a good thing. Billed as Perry & Special Guest the backstage area of the tent was put on lockdown as even Mark Ronson, his DJ sister Samantha, her special gal pal and more very VIPs gathered around in anticipation of the "Special Guest," none other than SLASH!

Wearing a Motorhead t-shirt and his trademark hair pulled back, the crowd went nuts when Slash came on stage for the last track of the Farrell's set. Afterwards, even though it was Farrell's timeslot, the crowd began chanting "Slash! Slash! Slash!" Farrell told the crowd that Slash had never practiced the two-chord guitar riff for the upcoming encore, but that he positive Slash would be a fast learner. That's when they launched into "Jane Says" and the sound went out. Dead. The crowd took over singing, while Slash's jam were barely audible. It was still a Lolla 2008 highlight.

But that wasn't all that Day Two brought. Dr. Dog kicked it off, proving that there is no band who dances as hard as they do while playing their instruments. The crowd let out a cheer when they kicked into the Easy Beat track "The World May Never Know" and diehards even bobbed along to their latest Fate's "The Rabbit, The Bat, And the Reindeer."

The Foals came close thought, rivaling Dr. Dog's moves. Guitarist Jimmy Smith, who was celebrating his birthday, seemed like he was going to fall off the stage or seriously hurt himself playing, but the Oxford guys' simple electronica and British yelps got tiring, despite being a total dance band.

My first impression of the Gutter Twins, who drew an older crowd was that they were dark. In the nearby artist tent Broken Social Scene members hung around and chilled before hoping on the Fest Express towards the opposite end where they would perform later that day.

MGMT & Devotchka, who usually throw a good party, were outdone by Spank Rock. The DJs seriously turned the energy level up for the mellow Saturday day. The mellowness is to be expected as its an after effect of the prior night's late night after shows and parties. Buckle up people, we've still got day three ahead of us.

another post that makes me wish I was not stuck in minnesota
EXCELLENT POST, love that song, wish I had been there but ya made me feel like I was kid. Thanks.
Great photos - as always - but if the highlight was "no audio" then it's a bit disconcerting. (no pun intended...) Are you weaving through the mess out there with indiepixie?
i love the guitarists in action shots! wow, Slash without the hair, i think i miss the hair. and Jane Says is righteous. good job, Charley, and nicely written!
LOVE the slash shots :)
Yeah Van...Pix & I rocked it hard, but for the most part we did catch different acts. Pix, yeah, but its not Slash in a mini-me chair.
I dig the rock & recycle sign...should be a t shirt!
Slash!!! Nice! I would have loved to see Foals...still have to catch them live.
