Grizzly Bear fa la la la la-ed, Your Vegas wore too much clothing (long sleeve shirts and jeans) for the 85 degree and humid Chicago weather, Duffy sounded just like she does on her album, Ohio-based duo the Black Keys' music was so powerful that I was convinced there was three or more people on stage, but the first day of Lollapalooza 2008 really belonged to Radiohead and The Raconteurs.
For the first time ever since becoming a stable festival in the Windy City back in 2005 Lollapalooza sold out, thanks to the "Karma Police." My third Lollapalooza and I hadve NEVER seen the fest this crowded. Its not a bad thing. There's room for the crowds. Spanning about 10 NYC city blocks Chicago's Grant Park drew masses to each of its 8 stages. During the Black Keys set the Raconteurs Brendon Benson hung around backstage, while the Kills Jamie Hince stood around listening to the Raconteurs later. And man oh man did those Raconteurs give us something to listen to.

(Black Keys...yup there was only two of 'em)

I've seen Jack White and Co three times this year…and their Lollapalooza set put them up on the same pedestal I regard the Rolling Stones and other classic rock bands. Each song was different with jams that included slow downed blues riffs intertwined with hard rock that spazzed like it was an AC/DC track. Tracks from the band's debut Broken Boy Soldiers melded perfectly together with songs off their latest Consolers Of The Lonely. I was left scratching my head as to what album songs like "Hold Up," "Rich Kid Blues" "Intimate Secretary" came off of. (Consolers Of The Lonely, Consolers Of The Lonely and Broken Boy Soldiers respectively).
Radiohead's 2 hourm double encore set drew the entire first day crowd of Lollapalooza. A crowd that left a field of plastic bottles afterwards that frontman Thom Yorke wouldn't have been happy about. The band spanned their entire discography songs off OK Computer, Kid A, Hail To The Thief, In Rainbows. They were the reason why Lolla for the first time in years actually, finally sold out.
