Oasis Owes Jay-Z Big Time: Rapper Resurrects Brits' "(What's The Story) Morning Glory"

Posted about 1 year ago

When I first saw the cover of the latest issue of NME, I thought "Ok, NME...let's not get ahead of ourselves here." As Jay-Z's mock cover of Oasis' "Wonderwall" gets freshly penned in as One Of The Greatest Moments In Music History, I wasn't necessarily a believer that the rapper had reborn the music festival. Deliver an epic performance he did, but I wasn't really buying that it made any major effect other than the entertainment factor. REBORN …that's a bit much.

Then I came across this story. "HOLY SHIT!" I thought to myself "HOVA is not only THE MAN, but his performance is really truly making a mark." BBC News is now projecting that based off of Jay-Z's Glastonbury performance the rapper's 2004 single "99 Problems" will be resurrected into the Top 25 on the UK chart. His Linkin Park duet "Numb/Encore" that he closed with Saturday is also looking to bounce back to the Top 40. And that's only the beginning!

In addition to Jay-Z, Oasis, who DID NOT play Glastonbury, but where mockingly covered by Jay-Z after the band's frontman Noel Gallagher dissed "I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong," are expected to bounce back on the charts with 1995's (What's The Story) Morning Glory. The album has experienced a 200% increase in sales since Jay-Z's Saturday night headlining performance at Glasto, where he covered the album's "Wonderwall."

Other Glastonbury performers are also expected to pop back into the Top 20 including Kings of Leon and The Verve.

Think Noel Gallagher is writing Jay-Z a THANK YOU letter?

Maybe Gallagher should send Jay an apology letter and a percentage of his royalities.  As Jay says "haha fuckas!"

I can totally see that.  I NEVER liked Wonderwall (or, anything else by Oasis), but the next couple days after seeing the Jay-Z performance, I actually found myself humming or singing the chorus.  I even sat and thought to myself, "Wow, that's not a bad song.  I should download it for Rock Band."  So, yeah, I can see Jay's stunt netting Oasis a few extra sales.

    Crazy!

This is totally hilarious, but it is a classic hip hop industry tactic.  Rappers have been benefiting from sometimes completely fabricated feuds, gaining free publicity.  I mean, really, the only TWO reasons Richard Ashcroft mentioned Jay-Z was 1) because he's mates with the Gallagher brothers and The Verve (or he personally) is never hurt by that association; and 2) Hip hop has its place (in the club mostly) and the genre is one that borrows from every other genre, thereby acting as a conduit for the discovery of new music.  Notice that Noel Gallagher was not cricizing Jay-Z, but Glastonbury.  Frankly, Jay-Z had big balls to play Glastonbury, based on its rock heritage.  Also, essentially, embracing Jay-Z (in one way or another) for Oasis and The Verve only has net benefits.  Nobody is going to quit listening to those bands because of some slight nod (negative or positive) to Jay-Z, whereas lots of new people might give Oasis and The Verve a listen just because Jay-Z is the most respected performer in Hip Hop today.  Frankly, I think the whole circle jerk of mutual admiration was conducted rather brilliantly by all parties.
