Free Bjork and Sigur Ros Concert To Air On National Geographic Web site

Posted about 1 year ago

A few years back I took a summer vaykay that included a stop in Iceland at the end of June. Oh, how I wish that vaykay were happening this year, because it'd coordinate perfectly with the free open air Náttúra concert Bjork and Sigur Ros are playing on June 28th in their homeland. The environmentally-charged concert's goal is to raise awareness of the destruction of Iceland's natural landscape.

Since everyone should be on a path to save the planet, the National Geographic Website will webcast the concert via their music site, Nat Geo Music, between 7pm to 10pm GMT (3pm—6pm EST) the same day. An on-demand stream will be available from National Geographic's Web site next week for anyone who misses the first webcast.

"Sigur Rós and I are neither environmental experts nor politicians," Bjork told the Icelandic paper Morgunblaðið, "but we travel around the world a lot and we have seen how far behind Iceland is in conserving our environment. For example, I was in South America for two months and you could see all these impoverished people recycling. We can't be 30 years behind; we need to be in the forefront."

The concert will also plug the Icelandic bestseller Dreamland: A Self-Help Manual to a Frightened Nation by Andri Snær Magnason, which is published in English next month by Citizen Press and has already won the Icelandic Literary Award and the Icelandic Bookseller Prize.

I wish I could go too, although I am actually a Bjork fan; I have not been exposed yet much to Sigur Ros....the fact that both acts are raising awareness of envirionmental conservation is a big plus, of course.
