Cold War Kids Using New Guerilla Marketing Concept To Promote Second Album?

Posted about 1 year ago

California indie rockers the Cold War Kids have released a minute long video plugging their sophomore album. Instead of coughing up a title, which is usually how these things work ("Cold War Kids release NAMEOFRECORDHERE on RELEASEDATEHERE"), the band has simply offered a date: September 23rd.

The CWK's whole concept of saying the release date now, and album name later, might be part of a new guerilla hype-producing strategy I have been noticing lately. Beck followed the prototype with his new album out this summer, and then there was Weezer. They did the same thing too, telling us a new "yet-to-be-titled" album was due in June, then changed the release date and just called the new album Weezer (for the third time). Let's just hope CWK take the extra time to get a little more creative than that.

Also, if you live in and around the Big Apple and have no plans for this Friday evening (June 27th) knock yourself out and go check out CWK at Prospect Park, where they will be playing (que magic word) for FREE. A national tour to promote the nameless, yet dated sophomore release kicks of September 27th at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon. Four major U.S. festival stops will warm CWK up before they hit the road.

I wonder if this concept is hoped to be effective in combating early leaks? I like the idea. It's kind of like a movie "teaser" trailer. :-)

First they created the "leaks" to add buzz around the bands, until it went out of their control. Now they try something else... those sales ppl are always amazing :)))

I think it's just so CWK.  As an unsigned band, they were always very talented with media and their design ethic is brilliant.  Signature CWK video for sure - maybe it means that CWK are smarter than the marketing folks????
