Track:
Yesterday my roommate Joel and I were having a conversation about Coldplay. With the release of Viva La Vida they are sort of everywhere. Joel was saying how with every passing day he couldn't stand Coldplay more and more. He use to really like them during the Parachute and Rush Of Blood To The Head days. I was saying how I feel like the general population says they can't stand Coldplay, yet they remain to be one of the biggest bands out there. In any case this past week there might be more reason to not hate, but spite Coldplay. I mean, me, I still like 'em and all but this sure makes me scratch my head.
You know the saying "art inspires other art." It seems Chris Martin and Co. have been living by that motto all week. On Monday stories began to surface that Coldplay had knocked off Brooklyn-based indie band Creaky Boards' tune "The Songs I Didn't Write." The front guy of Creaky Boards claimed that Chris Martin came to a show and ripped it off then. This little video explains it all:
Today Mogger BrandNewFriend posted another interesting link to a Joe Satriani tune that also sounds like Coldplay might have found inspiration from for "Viva La Vida"
To say that Coldplay have been ripping off the track is a little far-fetched. For me the lyrics personally do it the most on "Viva la Vida". But it does strike an uncanny resemblencce to the Avril Lavigne fiasco way back, where she and her producer ripped off old ditties and revamped them to call them her own.
Maybe that riff we keep hearing in "Viva LA Vida" can be coined as a signature one, like Bo Diddley's signature bomp-ba-domp-ba-domp, ba-domp-domp. Everyone from Petty to Springsteen incorpotated Diddley's rhythm in a song they wrote. Perhaps "Viva La Vida"s wah-waaah-wa deals with the same issue... or do Coldplay, in the words of my roomie, just suuuuuck.

dudddde. they are ubiquitous right now. like wayfarers in brooklyn. they are EVERYwhere.
Can we start the debate if Coldlay would be as big if Martin didn't marry Gwen. PLLLLEAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE? I need my pop culture fix for the day :)
PS I say the later on your last sentence. suck.
I totally saw that on some channel the other day where they showed the creaky boards video and then coldplay's. They just seem like soft, cheesy, super-market music to me. And to think they were rumored to be the next U2...
you know you guys both drool over chris martin
The funny thing is.....Avril has had to "postpone" some recent shows, presumably because they weren't selling so well. No one wants to play to an empty house, right?
And didn't Coldplay just cancel a bunch of shows, like a whole leg of their tour?
Oh, and Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy and Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln.....
I've said here before that I like Coldplay, but am ashamed to admit it. I think most of their male fans are that way. Either way, ripping off songs is not cool...
Who wrote it first... Satraini or Creaky Boards?
Satriani...The track" If I Could fly" appeared on Satriani's 2004 album Is There Love In Space?
