Stream Coldplay's New Single "Violet Hill"

Posted about 1 year ago
"Yesterday news hit that Coldplay":http://mog.com/Charley_Rogulewski/blog_post/158862 were giving out a free MP3 of their first Viva La Vida single, "Violet Hill." So today I ventured into the inter-space to download the track via the Band's Web site. After being asked for my email, zip code and country of origin I was told to check my inbox for a link to the download. I ran into minor technical difficulties. The link kept demanding a password and user name to access the download. WTF? After cutting and pasting the given download link into my URL box it finally worked and Voila!Let me know what you think...

  1. tjayfowler says Well, the one thing that's going for it is that it doesn't really sound like Coldplay. Aside from the singing, it sounds like pink floyd, boston and a little popular american country. Could possibly be this terrible case of influenza, though.

  3. lifebed1 says I think Eno was a good choice for producer (I think he is producing here) and it doesn't sound like Coldplay trying to one up themselves. An unlikely single which I also think is cool. It's a bit odd in a good way.

  4. GarageRock says I never liked Coldplay, and now like them even less lol....sorry. It does sound like the newer Floyd stuff tho....not exactly a good thing.

  5. Jonh Ingham says Being indifferent to Coldplay I can't say I'm enamoured but they get an A for moving forwards and not repeating what they already done. The Eno influence is all over this in a very positive way, but Chris has been listening to too much late period Floyd. It's easy to dump on these guys but full credit for growing as artists.

  6. getafade says I like Coldplay, and I like this track. Although I do have to admit that I don't like to admit I like them. Thanks for going through the hassle of getting this!

  10. persephone says Cowboy rock back beat. I kinda like it but very seventies and very FM radio-y and might get stale real quick. The best part is when it is just Chris and the piano at the end.

  11. UKCHAZ says I agree with the link to a "Floyd" style and with the comments about working with ENO. Also agree that this is a song that is aimed at the USA FM radio market, however I don't think it will go stale quickly. It is widening their style range. With the fan database having grown so much with the free release of their single and ticket offer for their shows in London and New York; I suspect that the band may be preparing for grabbing a bigger slice of the pie and thinking for the future!

  12. photographyandme says I have only had the chance to listen to this twice. I had to throw in my thoughts into the mog ring. At first this strikes me as song that can only be appreciated at high decibels in a live venue. It is not a new direction for coldplay as much as it is an attempt to be a more of a prototypical "rock" band. Coldplay has often come off as sort of soft. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I feel as though this is their attempt at widening their already huge audience. I read an article once that named coldplay as the number one most influential band of the 2000's. This single is not validating that bold statement. I'll have to wait for the album to make up my mind.
