Saturday Night Live Pokes Fun At Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews And John Mayer

Posted about 1 year ago
Bank account on low? Then you probably spent Saturday night staying in watching re-runs of Top Chef and Saturday Night Live. For the most part this week's SNL episode wasn’t that funny. Blame cougar-loving host Ashton Kutcher. However, Saturday night chillers let out a universal chuckle when SNL IT-boy Andy Samburg spoofed everyone's favorite mellow guitarist Jack Johnson in a little clip called "The Mellow Show." Homage was also paid to fellow mellow axeman Dave Matthews, and the not so mellow John Mayer. Gnarls Barkley were the evening's musical guests performing "Run" and Who's Gonna Save My Soul" off their new album The Odd Couple.Song 1 "Run (I'm A Natural Disaster)"Song 2 "Who's Gonna Save My Soul"

  2. Mike the Knife says C'mon. The skit with the four guys recounting creepy stories in a bar while singing along with Pure Prairie League's "Amie" was pretty funny. (And anything Kristen Wiig does is alright with me.) But yes, "The Mellow Show" was a well-deserved slam at those wimp-meisters.

  8. contrabandwidth says Man, that was so overdue. I've never understood why people judge the whole body of the show, and not the skits (even though there's thousands of hours of cringe worthy skits). There's usually at least one little gem in there somewhere. It ebbs and flows, some times they're off, sometimes they're on. It's certainly not an easy show to write for, being they bring about 80 skits to a show and only about 10 or so (I don't know the exact amount) make it to air, most at last minute. The show is a Jaugernat, occasionally it starts to coast, but new talent like Samberg comes in and it seems to find a new stride. Say what you will about Lorne Michaels, but it takes a very gifted person to be able to due what he does. Didn't Mel Brooks say "Dying is Easy, Comedy is Hard"?

  9. Charley Rogulewski says i remember growing up and always hearing that the Chris Farley, Mike Meyer, Dana Carvey years were never as good as the Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd. Everyone says that the cast now is not as good as it was when it was really funny during the Chris Farley, Mike Meyer, Dana Carvey years that everyone now looks back on and thinks were so funny. Its like this weird cycle of shaming the show until it become nostalgia. As for the videos...they keeep taking them down (sorry). keep looking for them to repost.

  10. contrabandwidth says To see what goes into that show, everyone should read "Live From New York", it's an oral history of the show. I have so much respect for anyone whose made it for their 5 years on the show, it's hard work.

  11. Scotch says As contra mentioned, the show ebbs and flows. But it helps to understand why - once the players get a name for themselves, they leave. All too often SNL gets a whole group of folks at once who rise together and essentially leave together. Gut the show, and what are you left with? Lorne having to scramble to once again get talented, hard-working folks in there. Charley, Eddie Murphy came in after Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd left, I dig what you're saying.

  12. Charley Rogulewski says i hear ya...I am forced to watch Season 1 ans Season 2 (now on DVD) religiously. MY bf eats, sleeps and dreams SNL. Seeing it back then, (i wasn't alive yet during season 1 and 2) helps me understand those times and see how humor has changed through the years, which it has. but it also gives me an appreciation for the show i didn't have before. i just got bummed when it was funny.

  13. Scotch says Bummed? I don't think that's the goal... :-/

  14. Charley Rogulewski says i was typing fast...i meant bummed when its NOT funny. forgot the NOT. thanks for clearing that Scotch.

  15. Scotch says hehe I do that all the time. Sure would be nice to be able to edit comments after the fact, for those of us with dodgy proofreading skillz. Apparently the "Preview" button isn't good enough for you and me. I feel like I'm in good company, though.
