Hanging Out With The Slits In NYC's East Village, New Album On The Way

Posted about 1 year ago
Yesterday, I met up with Slits founding member Ari Up and new addition Hollie Cook (spawn of Sex Pistol's Paul Cook) at the East Village reggae record haven Jammyland. While a frazzled Ari Up, feeling out of it from a virus she's been fighting, combed the bins, I got to sneak in a few questions about the ladies' recent comeback.(Ari Up with her own record in hand)For those of you not familiar with the Slits, the band formed in the late 70's during the punk era inception, and were loved for their infectious music that crisscrossed the genre with reggae and dub elements. The group disbanded in the Eighties, reuniting again two years ago with a tour and the release of the three song, ten-minutes long EP Revenge Of The Killer Slits. Hollie, who's as sweet as sugar, explained how she got a call from her mom, an old pal of the Slits, urging her to go to the studio for the recording of the new EP. She eventually lent her chops on the track "Slits Tradition" and the rest is history. (Hollie Cook)Now Hollie, Ari, Tessa (also part of Slits early heyday), and drummer Anna, a former Miss Germany are prepping a new Slits album. They've gone into the studio to record s few tracks they hope to release sometime in the near future."It's us moving forward, not reuniting," Ari says of the new Slits era.
