MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

SXSW: The Von Bondies Pick-Up Schwag, The Clipse Shake-Up Austin

While people line up to see Jens Lenkman at Emo’s, My Morning Jacket is warming up for their big show tonight and others are piling in to see if Eddie Vedder will show up during a Stubb’s set with Ben Harper, I sit diligently writing this post of the day’s festivities. Earlier this morning MOG watched as Perry Farrell interviewed Lou Reed about his film “Berlin.” It was a historic event as it marked the first time the two had met each other. Reed told Farrell about the boho venue they decided to tape the film at (St. Ann’s Warehouse, Brooklyn, NY) and even asked Farrell to make him a mix of music. After all, Farrell does help put on one of America’s largest festival’s every summer…Lollapalooza. “I’m always listening for new music,” Farrell humbled by Reed’s request told us afterwards. We met up with the Von Bondies Jason Stollsteimer, whose set we caught at Emo’s Annex just last night. The Detroit band sounded almost metal. Definitely head banging, playing fast and loud while Stollsteimer flip-flopped between screaming and Freddie Mercury screeches. “Well I knew Motorhead would be around.” Stollsteimer said later of the set, a little self-conscious of his quick finger-picking.Stollsteimer tried to help me steal some schwag from the MySpace/Spin tent, where artists have been getting gifted with Guitar Hero, free Vans shoes and Ben Sherman digs. “Just say you are one of the guitarists in my band,” Stollsteimer urges me. (Stollsteimer with his free Guitar Hero)Stollsteimer is in good spirits. Other than scoring a new free Guitar Hero console (the band’s song “C'mon C'mon” is featured on the game’s soundtrack), Stollsteimer will no doubt be trying to land a perfect 10 while practicing for future shows on the colorful fret board, but for now we’ve got him talking about the band’s new album. More on that later…Along with Sons and Daughters, the Clipse shook the Rhapsody day party to the core. People sipped Blue Moons and margaritas while the hip-hop duo played many tracks off 2006's Hell Hath No Fury.
