Why A Led Zeppelin Reunion At Bonnaroo Shouldn't Be Ruled Out

Posted about 1 year ago
Fans heading out to Bonnaroo 2008 should keep their eyes and ears peeled for that rumored Led Zeppelin reunion. Despite the fact that the festival's '08 line-up left out the iconic rock act, who recently reunited for a one-off gig in London, there are some coincidences that lead us to think that dispelling those "Led Zeppelin's Playing Bonnaroo" might be a bit premature.Sans the Zep, the line-up for Bonnaroo '08 is still diverse and amazing. Kanye West, who just took home four Grammys for his album Graduation will headline one night, while Metallica will make its first Bonnaroo appearance on the main stage. Yes, Metallica, which brings us to our first coincidence. For Led Zeppelin's return at the O2 arena this past December, Robert Plant decided he wanted to use a special audio system, one he had witnessed during a Metallica concert at Wembley Stadium earlier that summer. More specifically its called the Midas XL8 Live Performance System and Led Zeppelin hired Metallica's sound guy for the last two decades, Big Mick Hughes, as front of house for the O2 Arena reunion job. Coincidence one: The same sound guy that monitored the O2 gig, will be at Bonnaroo already.Coincidence Number Two is pretty obvious. Robert Plant will already be there playing with Alison Krauss. Even "Page blamed the postponement":http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1580419/20080128/led_zeppelin.jhtml of a Led Zeppelin tour on Plant's commitment to his duet album with Krauss Raising Sand. "Krauss and Plant are touring":http://pollstar.com/tour/searchall.pl?By=Artist&Content=158857&Key=Y in support of the well-received album through the end of May, when they wrap in Norway on the 19th. That leaves Plant and Krauss with a month before the Bonnaroo gig, plenty enough time (more than 3 weeks) for Plant to warm up with Zep for a surprise Bonnaroo gig. Lastly, the band's multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones is no stranger to the Bonnaroo circuit, having played the Super Jam, an unannounced mixed-artist jam, just last year. Perhaps this year's superjam will hold Led Zeppelin's live set.Perhaps this is all elementary. Perhaps I've put too much time into it. But one thing is for sure, with "the sick line-up":http://www.bonnaroo.com/artists.aspx that already is Bonnaroo '08 I am going and I'm keeping my hopes up.

  1. davesonic says Wow, are we really that desparate for this band to do a show? Myself I would be more excited to see Plant with Alison Krauss, doing what he can do do today not what he was doing 30 years ago.

  2. Mackenzie P says I'm sure anyone would be psyched at the chance to catch Zeppelin. I'm not buying anyone who brushes it off like it be no big deal. Please... a little credit for the investigative journalism.
