MELT-PROOF AND SCRATCH-RESISTANT

50th Annual Grammy Awards Are A Go

Posted about 1 year ago
With the Writers Guild Of America strike still looming, the 50th Grammy Awards faced possible cancellation, or a scaled back version of the telecast similar to that of the recent Golden Globes. However, the striking WGA writers who planned on picketing the annual awards show, announced yesterday that they WILL NOT protest. What does his mean for us, the fans and viewers? Performances by the Foo Fighters and Beyonce will go on as planned and Kanye West, who leads with eight nominations for his album Graduation, will be able to bling it.Neil Portnow, president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science, which organizes the Grammy telecast said he was "pleased" with decision made by the WGA, who is striking for more online and DVD compensation. "In light of this," Portnow continued, "we are gratified that the 50th Annual Grammy Awards will focus solely on the great music, artists and charitable work resulting from our show. We look forward to unveiling the exciting lineup of artists who will give our worldwide audience one of the most memorable Grammy shows ever."The Recording Academy is now trying to negotiate deals that would allow some striking writers help with the production of the show. Before Tuesday's announcement, Cossette Productions, who is putting on the show, wanted to negotiate an interim agreement similar to the one signed by the WGA with David Letterman's company, Worldwide Pants (airing on the same network as the GRAMMY telecast). The agreement would allow the hired writers to be compensated fairly for the work, while still respecting and recognizing their picketing causes.Only the Foos and Beyonce (both are up for Record Of The Year) had signed on thus far to perform at the show. More artists will jump on the performance bandwagon now that there will be no picket lines to cross. For a full list of nominees head "here":http://www.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/The 50th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on Feb. 10, 2008, at Staples Center in Los Angeles and once again will be broadcast live in high definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS from 8 – 11:30 p.m. (ET).
