Vedder And Greenwood Get Dissed By Academy For Oscar Nods

Posted about 1 year ago
If Three 6 Mafia can be called "an Academy Award award-winning American hip hop" group, why in the world are neither Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder or Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood nominated for an 2008 Oscar? The nominees for the 80th annual Academy Awards aka Oscars were announced Tuesday morning. And despite the fact that Eddie Vedder's original track "Guaranteed" for the Sean Penn-directed flick Into The Wild won a Golden Globe last week, Vedder's name was left off the Oscar nominee list. Eddie Vedder, "Guaranteed" off the Into The Wild soundtrackFurthermore, There Will Be Blood along with the Coen Brothers' flick No Country for Old Men both led with eight Oscar nods each, including Best Picture for both. There Will Be Blood included a score by Radiohead's axeman Jonny Greenwood. However, the composition was ineligible for an Oscar nomination because “the majority of the music [on the score] was not composed specifically for the film”.If the film is starring Daniel Day Lewis chances are high it's gonna run you over 2 hours (I.e. Gang of New York). Although Greenwood's composition was originally 35 minutes long, in the film another 46 minutes of pre-written music is featured, including 15 minutes of Greenwood’s 2006 work Popcorn Superhet Receiver. Had not the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences been privy to this, Greenwood would have a a good shot at the little gold man statue. So who took Vedder's and Greenwood's nods? The Disney film Enchanted, which dominated the best original song category with three of the five nods. August Rush and Once also got nods in the category. The nominees for the best original score category were Dario Marianelli for Atonement Alberto Iglesias for The Kite Runner, James Newton Howard for Michael Clayton, Michael Giacchino for Ratatouille and Marco Beltrami for 3:10 to Yuma.I bet the Academy gets paid off by Disney. Vedder's music was way better than that animated mouse movie's.For the full list of nominees for the 2008 Academy Awards head "here.":http://oscar.com/

  1. Lizziegreeneyes says Once contributed a top 10 album for me in 2007... but for Vedder to get snubbed... don't even want to go there - that music added so much to the brilliantly directed & acted film it makes me sad for the state of the industry. I ALWAYS have to remind myself that the Oscars/Emmys/Grammys are all a popularity contest - it's not about the real GRIT & TRUTH of any artistic foray. Just my feelings on that. 8 outta 10 times I am horrified by the winners, let alone the nominees... We know who should be nominated... sadly - what we know isn't what is for the most part.
