The story goes that drummer Patrick Keeler - one-third of the Greenhornes and one-forth of the Raconteurs - was surfing YouTube when he came across a clip of Zee Avi. Impressed he got it into the hands of Brushfire Records execs and before you know it the pint-size, Malaysian-born singer-songwriter is the first solo female artist signed to the surfer, dude-heavy label.

Already being tagged as a female version of label mate Jack Johnson, Avi's Crayola crayon voice reminds of Moldy Peaches' Kimya Dawson or a chirpier and more tropical Joni Mitchell. Live she'll whip out a ukelele or give contemporary songs like Interpol's "Slow Hands" her own little sweet spin. Zee Avi's debut self-titled album hits May 19th, 2009 boasting the lead single "Bitter Heart," which you can listen to above.
Tour Dates:
May 19th - Instore @ Fingerprints - Long Beach, CA
May 20th - KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic (on air and online)
May 20th - The Roxy (seated show) - Los Angeles, CA
May 22nd - Rickshaw Stop - San Francisco, CA

Very nice -- thanks for this.
That's a nice peppy little tune. I could see her touring with Jack.
Such a billowy, fluffy and marshmallow voice. Nice.
