Jack Johnson Hits Up Europe On New DVD & Live Album

Posted about 3 years ago

It's not another Jack Johnson surf movie. Well, not quite. Teaming up with his long-time film collaborator Emmett Malloy, the Banana Pancake fanatic has a new DVD and live album in the can that will be released to his adoring fans sometime this fall. The Malloy documentary follows Johnson avec surfboard on a tour through Europe. Yeah, I'm throwing a little French in there. Figured I would since the whole thing is called Jack Johnson En Concert. Not only did the mellowest dude with an acoustic guitar stop in Paris, he also hit up Berlin, Munich, The Hague, London and the UK coastal town of Watergate Bay in Newquay where it looks like he caught some waves. I mean it wouldn't be a legit Jack Johnson documentary without surf time, now would it?

Johnson & Malloy work quickly. The whole tour, in support of 2008's Sleeping Through The Static , was not only the biggest of Jack's career, but it only went down last summer. Along the way guests like Ben Harper, G. Love, Mason Jennings, Neil Halstead and Matt Costa show up and jam. Kinda beats that backpacking Euro-rail trip I did with my brother and sister back in the day.

"You're taking this music done in front of oceans and waves and translating that to a stage in the middle of nowhere," says Malloy about the concept of yet another concert DVD. "How are you going to stay true to the music and play to a big crowd?" Seems the question is answered on the DVD giving pretty good reason to pick this one out of the zillions released each year.
