Songs About Janitors & The Spanish Civil War Fill New Builders & Butchers Album

Posted 7 months ago

It's time for Number Two from Alaska natives the Builders & the Butchers. These Americana roots rockers captured hearts originally with their 2007 self-titled debut, following frontman Ryan Sollee's psycho obsession with pre-1950's American music. A new Portland-transplant Sollee added his Alaska pals to the mix, after they waved goodbye to the land of Sarah Palin in hopes of warmer weather. You know how these stories go: someone had a guitar in their hand, another one picked up a bass, another a mandolin and then another said he knew how to play drums and viola! the Builders & the Butchers were formed.

For the new album, titled Salvation is a Deep Dark Well (how Woody Guthrie is that!) the Builders & the Butchers decided to pen some more tunes about the Spanish Civil War of all things (see debut's "Spanish Death" and newbie "Barcelona".)

Sollee also serves as troubadour on the opening track "Golden & Green" retelling the story of Chicago recluse Henry Darger. Darger, a janitor and writer, secretly scribed a 15,000 page novel with illustrations before his death in 1973. The band calls the tune "one of the strangest Builders songs." You'd think ocnsidering the context. And for melodica fans, try the new track "Short Way Home."

Salvation is a Deep Dark Well is out on Gigantic Music June 30th. If you like the Felice Brothers you'll like these guys.
