It started off with one song and ended with a four track EP named for it. The Breeders, the baby of Pixies bassist Kim Deal and twin sis Kelley, recorded "Fate and Fatal" at Fortress studios in London. It didn't stop there. They eventually took the project to Kim's basement where she also invited Screaming Trees/Queens of the Stone Age/Gutter Twins guitarist/vocalist Mark Lanegan over for a sing session, and laid down the EP's second track "The Last Time." It didn't stop there. Another basement track followed - "Pinnacle Hollow" - made on a 4-track tape. And it's all topped off with a cover of Bob Marley and the Wailers' "Chances Are" recorded at producer Steve Albini's Chicago studio.
"It seems that now," Kim said in a statement, "more than at any other time in the past, we could put the music out ourselves - hand-screen some cool artwork ourselves, sell the EPs at our shows and on our website, as well as get them to traditional record stores and other online outlets."
The Fate to Fatal EP will be self-released and out April 21st along with 1000 vinyl. A video for "Fate To Fatal" featuring the Breeders amidst a roller derby game is in post-production.
