WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Prince Whores It Out With Target

Posted 9 months ago

Where else can you buy Isaac Mizrahi bed sheets, a bag of Doritos, patio furniture and the three new Prince albums? Fuckin' Target.

Like the Eagles, AC/DC and Springsteen at Wal-mart, Prince will release his two new anticipated albums, 'LotusFlow3r,' 'MPLSound,' plus 'Elixir,' which he collaborated on with his latest protege Bria Valente, exclusively to Target. All three will be available together for $11.98. Now that is a better deal than any Xhiliration tank top you'll find in there. All of this goes down at a Target near you on March 29th.

But say you live somewhere a Target is not prevalent, like Canada? None to worry. In addition to being available on Target.com, the Purple One will also launch his new 3-D-tastic Web site LotusFlow3r.com later this month that will preview and also sell his newbies before Target can even put their little red stamp on them.

Maybe if artists are able to open new revenue flows like corporate sponsorship though exclusive selling rights they will stop complaining about their music being shared or used in youtube fan-videos. Probably not.

I have a DVD set the Stones released "exclusively" to Best Buy or Circuit City. I don't know if these deals work out for the artists but the distribution system for the recording industry is broken and sales through conventional outlets continue to fall. (CD sales off by some 15% year over year). However, "free" isn't really free, if you know what I mean.

Prince and Target got the Minneapolis thing in common. At least he's working with a hometown company.

I distribute my music through CD baby which in turns distributes through target and others and have seen my music listed on Walmart also. Who do you whore it up with Charley?? When you sell a product...you will get ripped off if its successfull! Music or otherwise, its part of doing business..period. The nature of the beast,so to speak! That is the way of the world...I wish it wasn't. How do you get it out there otherwise without corporate fasicism??

Prince is a little dweeb, albeit a talented little dweeb --- and not exactly devoid of business acumen.

    Prince is from Minny.

    Target is based in Minny.

It makes perfect sense to me.

    I'm confused.

So his last album he gave away in a London newspaper but now this go around he is selling via Target?

I know he wants distribution of his album but his name alone should get others to find his website and buy his music?

    He lost me here.

    Thanks for sharing..
