The Verve reunited for their first live show in nine years at Glasgow's Carling Academy venue last Friday, a reunion that coincides with the early 2008 release of a new, yet-to-be titled album from the British rock band. The original line-up of Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones and Pete Salisbury took the stage for a 90-minute set that included a three song encore. (The only former member not present onstage was guitarist/keyboardist Simon Tong who continues his work with The Good, The Bad and The Queen.)Frontman Richard Ashcroft opened up the set by shouting "This is Music," after which the band began playing the single of the same name from their 1995 album
A Northern Soul. Images of Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and band lyrics warmed up the crowd. One new track "Sit And Wonder," which
NME described as reminiscent of The Stone Roses second album, found its way to the setlist among classics like "Bitter Sweet Symphony," "Sonnet" and "The Drugs Don't Work." Following the two nights in Glasgow, the Verve head to Blackpool's Empress Ballroom (November 5, 6) and London's Roundhouse (November 8, 9).
