The claws are out and Etta James has got some long ones. The 71 year-old singer wants to whoop Beyonce's ass. At a concert last week in Seattle James acknowledged how pissed off she was over Beyonce singing her song "At Last " at President Barack Obama's Neighborhood Inaugural Ball on January 20th. Beyonce mastered the lyrics for her upcoming role as James in the flick Cadillac Records.
"She gonna get her ass whipped ...I can't stand Beyonce, she had no business up there singing ... my song that I've been singing forever," James told the Seattle crowd before plowing through "At Last." Check the audio clip from the concert out below:
Prior to the Seattle concert on January 28th no one really knew James was so PO-ed at Beyonce. James later admitted to "feeling left out of something that was basically mine, that I had done every time you look around." She also brushed it off as a joke because we all know there is a little too much Beyonce ass for that cougar to whoop.
You guys can be the judge...Who sings it bettter?

Damn! Where did she come from?
Out of respect, Etta should have been there. I mean Beyonce is popular he already won the election!
Now this sounds like a great opportunity for Pay Per View!
I don't think anyone knew that Etta James was still alive.
so true troy. so true.
Thon Youtube clip isn't really Etta at her best, IMHO. Curiously enough, "At Last" has never been seen as one of the best tunes so far as British compilers of Etta are concerned - we tend to prefer her "grittier" tunes
Yeah, that youtube clip wasn't too great. She didn't have the sound engineering and controls I'm sure Beyonce' did at the "Neighborhood Ball". The original artist is always the best in my opinion - you really can't outdo them.
thats a good point
p-wagz, normally you're right that the original is the best; it's inspired by the composer's whole life, whereas the cover version is inspired by only the original. (That's an oversimplification; I know.) But Etta James' version proves that wrong, because her version is so much better than Glenn Miller's fine earlier version from the late 1930s or early 1940s (available from the iTune Store). I learned this from emscee's 2/7/09 post. Beyonce's version is faithful to Etta's; perhaps she could have been allowed to mention something nice about Etta to the audience before singing the song. I read recently that old women are more likely to become curmudgeons than old men are.

Oh snap!
(Well, either that or a cage match on cougarfights.com)
"I don't think anyone knew that Etta James was still alive."
That hurts, considering she's was still recording and was on tour a couple years ago. Winner of both Best Contemparay Blues and Best Traditial Blues albums in recent years.
If she had written the song, she'd have a good case, since I don't anyone can agrue that Beyonce does it better. Personally, I always prefered the Lou Rawls & Dianna Reeves duet version.
Beyonce does a great job recreating the classic version of this song, but Etta cleary has made it her own. She put goose bumps on my skin and sent shivers up my spine, litterally. Beyonce's version is like a nice new pair of shoe, Etta's is that pair after it has been broken in and fit your feet just right, comfortable enough to walk around all day without any blisters.
