WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

U2 Bombing With New Single "Get On Your Boots"

Posted 11 months ago

U2's new single "Get On Your Boots" only debuted at Number 37 this week. Pretty weak for one of today's biggest selling rock acts. Not that all hope and expectations for the new U2 album No Line On The Horizon should be lost. Comeback kid Kelly Clarkson's new single "My Life Would Suck Without You" was resurrected from 97 last week to Numero Uno on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. But still does the new U2 single suck? Or is the world just angry it didn't premiere via an iTunes iPod commercial.

In other U2 news... the band are apparently thinking about buying London's Olympic Studios, where Hendrix, the Beatles, and Led Zeppelin have all recorded. EMI, the studios current owner, are putting it up on the market after the rooms failed to roll in a profit. Olympic was one of the places U2 laid down tracks for the new album.

I didn't buy it yet -- it seems closer to the style of Zooropa or Pop to me, which are not my favorit U2 albums.  As a single, it doesn't have the power of Vertigo, either.   I don't hate the song, it just not one of my favorite U2 offerings.

I'm diggin' it. Not sure why it wouldn't do well, it definitely rocks & sounds so much better than alot of the top 40 crap out there.

Definitely seems like a dud to me. there is lots of energy and noises, but no clarity or focus. and the queens of the stone age backup vocals are pretty cheesy. I agree with Funoka, too. It sounds like it could've been on Pop or Zooropa, only with more White noise. Oh well... maybe the rest of the album is better.

I haven't been a fan of their stuff since The Joshua Tree. A few songs here and there but primarily it's all been seriously downhill for them, to me, since 1988.

U2  Have stayed true to their vision while exploring the 21st century musical landscape....that there have been a few thudding failures should not surprise....that the band is still willing to take risks should thrill.  I will not say (yet) that their best work is behind them.

You're listening to Chris Moyles?! (ha bloody ha,..no bad language rubbing off i hope)...sounds like "Pump it up" in the verses...bit daft with the "Kinky boots" type theme...

as a huge u2 fan, they really cant do wrong by me. but i definitely understand why its not knocking people off their socks... or boots. as funoka said its got that Pop feeling and its also very busy. i like it, but it lacks the punch vertigo had. but im sure ill like the album.

    • #8 on Modern Rock chart, U2's highest debut since "Discotheque"
    • #1 on Triple A (Adult Album Alternative), the first time a song has debuted at #1

But U.S. sales were a different story. GOYB only debuted at #21 on the Soundscan sales chart, selling 57,267 copies (downloads).

Meanwhile, Canadian radio loves the tune. According to Radio & Records Canada, BOOTS debuted at #1 on the Rock Airplay, Rock Most Added, and Rock Most Increased Plays charts. (thx Jono)

for a band that is so political and so many significant issues, the song seems sort of insignificant. the melody rocks
