Jailtime For Babyshambles' Pete Doherty Deferred

Posted over 4 years ago
Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty avoided jail time thanks to his drug rehab improvement. Doherty was arrested last May on suspicion of possession of crack cocaine and cannabis. He admitted making the offenses and was later charged with four counts of drug possession and with driving a car without insurance or tax.A judge in the case said she would make her verdict after reviewing charts from the rehab facility he had been attending for the past 18-months.Since it seems he has cleaned up his act, the judge sentenced Doherty to a four months custodial sentence, but has suspended it for two years while Doherty is supervised for 18-months and serves a year-long drug-rehab order. He also received a £475 fine for driving without insurance.Half of the custodial sentence is usually spent in a secure establishment (i.e. jail, rehab, reformatory). The other half is spent under supervision of a specific social worker. Outside of the courthouse Doherty told reporters, "It's just the beginning, you know what I mean. My life has changed."

Officially, Doherty pleaded guilty to a charge of causing criminal damage stemming from an encounter last summer. the only thing that will come of this is that the world will see you can only be arrested on various drug charges for six or seven years before you will spend several weeks in jail. So really, it will serve as quite the public deterrent. Actually what should serve as quite the public deterrent is any photo of Pete Doherty. That’s a hell of a lot scarier than jail time.
