MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:
Album: Rockin' The Suburbs
Track:
(75)

I've been composing again! Wait, that makes it seem like I've been sitting down with manuscript and putting time and effort into constructing a melody, harmony and bassline. Not the case. More like I sit down at the harp and happen to play some chords that sound good together and work on it. I've got a nice thing happening in F maj. Doing stuff like that makes me appreciate other artists melodies. My current favourites playlist is abundant in good melodies with Elliott Smith, The Flaming Lips, John Mayer and The Beatles all featuring. There are some more interesting melody ideas there from Radiohead, The Velvet Underground and Pink Floyd as well. And of course, Ben Folds Five and Ben Folds solo. As soon as I figure out how to get the jazzy cabaret sound onto harp, I'm thinking outside of classical music my sound will echo that of the piano man. I've always had a soft spot for pop music [not popular music, but that definite sound from artists like Ben and The Flaming Lips and many other singles] and it shines right through my composing. I've never gotten into the whole drone sound. Songs need chord change! Even if only twice or three times! Anyway. I thought I'd share the simple genius of "Not The Same" as a perfect example of what I mean. Nothing unpredictable, no odd beats. Simply an idea built upon in the most logical way. And done so in a way that the listener gets the emotion. Might not be the saddest song for us to listen to, but those minor chords strike your heart.

Without further ado...

One of the [now rare] moments when I really wish songs had no ends.

oh and by the way, our lake now has water in it again!

For some reason I never picked up any BF5 or solo Ben. I really like this song, thanks for the reminder. Has spring kicked in yet?

Always glad to spread the love. I've been collecting Ben lately, so I'm a little obsessed. Spring starts now! :] Winter had a last attack though yesterday. It had been sunny and warm all week and then on August 31st it was completely miserable and wet. Now it's sunny again! How's autumn coming along?

Autumn unofficially starts after this weekend, on wednesday most American kids start a new year of school. We won't really see a difference, weather wise, for another couple of weeks though. It's still early Friday night here and I'm about to take off, nice to hear from you!

This one is so cool when he has the audience rock it out with him (performing the ahhhhs) & then in the end jumps atop the grand & conducts the ahhhs. You would LOVE it.

Can't say that there is a song that's come from his lips I haven't fallen for - love every one so I can understand your present collecting :)

You sure I can't mail that mix to you - I've tried countless times & there is no love generated between my computer & Multiply....

oooh I hope he comes to Australia again soon, one of my friends saw him with the symphony orchestra, could've died with jealousy!

regarding the mix, I really wish it could be sent but...well my parents happen to be the incredibly paranoid type and won't let me give out our address over the internet. I'm sorry! It's just their way, wish it were otherwise but that's what you get I spose.
