So it's quite early in the morn over here, for a Saturday at least, but I had a nice warm fuzzy thought this morning.
Walkman on random, lying in bed watching the sky get bleaker and bleaker and "It's Summertime" by the Flaming Lips comes on. I don't usually like this song as much as others but bah! no energy for pressing that little button to skip it.
Listening to the lyrics I got annoyed.
I know it's not Wayne Coyne's fault there're still twelve days of winter left, but why's he got to tell me it's summertime over and over?? Argh.
But then I thought.
For a very VERY vast majority of the world, it IS still summertime. When it's chilly and foggy and white [not snow, we should be so lucky] somewhere, it's still summer somewhere else. A whole group of other people are enjoying everything that's fabulous!
It made me smile.
In related news, it's coming round to that time of year when I make my SuMMA MiKS. A collection of songs-to-make-you-feel-good that becomes my soundtrack for summer. I was very proud of my summer mix last year, so I wonder what it will have in it this year? I'll start work on it in spring and I won't listen to it til the first of December.
Last year's went thus, with songs from a few years ago to some of my favourite songs from 2006:
1. Island In the Sun - Weezer 2. Scott Farcas Takes It On the Chin - Less than Jake 3. Dirty Man - The Living End 4. Tangerine Speedo - Caviar 5. The Chariot - The Cat Empire 6. Take On Me - Reel Big Fish 7. Slide - Goo Goo Dolls 8. I Believe I Can Fly - Me First & The Gimme Gimmes 9. Blister In the Sun - Violent Femmes 10. Sweet Alcohol - You Am I 11. Walking On sunshine - Me First & The Gimme Gimmes 12. Scar - Missy Higgins 13. Keep Fishin' - Weezer 14. Nosebleed Section - Hilltop Hoods 15. The Rhythm - The Cat Empire 16. Feel Good Hit Of the Summer - Queens Of the Stoneage 17. Growing On Me - The Darkness 18. Trapped - The Living End 19. Big Crash - Less Than Jake 20. Jimmy - The Living End 21. Not The Same - Bodyjar 22. What's the Deal? - 28 Days 23. The Science Of Selling Yourself Short - Less than Jake it's quite long yes? Lots of Aussie artists, lots of "punk", I spent a while getting the track list right so it was good to listen to. But I've had a fair change of heart since then, so I'm wondering what will make the cut?

My favorite time of year is winter, summer's good, spring is great but I'm at my happiest during the winter. It's summer here in New York. It's been grey here all day as well, then it started to thunder and lightning around 4pm. Now it's 9:50pm Friday night and it's still pissing a bit. I don't think I'd ever be able to equate August with cold grey days, Christmas with green leafy trees and plush lawns, sweating in the shade on New Years day. Here in NY the trees start to turn colors in late September. Our first snow comes around Dec.25th and winter lasts until the beginning of March when things slowly start to warm up. Right now the high schools in most of North America are on summer break. They start back up in about two weeks, just when your winter is ending.

I know what you mean, I could never imagine a cold New Year's. That's fire season! And school starting in the middle of the year? Crazy! It's lucky that the snow comes right around Christmas, seems very well planned out. First couple of weeks in January are the hottest in Victoria; New Year's 2006 was 40o C [104o F]! It's weird, Autumn's not such a noticeable thing in Australia, because the native trees are all evergeen. Unless you go into town where there are elm trees on the streets there aren't too many places you'd see gold leaves. And I don't think it's half as pretty as it is in America (my brother was there last year).
