WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Snow

Because it's snowing. This song is called "Sheleg al Iri" ("Snow on my City"), by Naomi Shemer, who possibly the most prominent of Israel's singers and songwriters. She wrote the song "Jerusalem of Gold", regarded by some as "Israel's second national anthem", and the music for "Shirat HaAsavim", among many other songs. The lyrics in English:Snow on my city, the whole night restsMy love has left for the warm landsSnow on my city and the night is coldFrom the warm lands he will bring me a dateThe honey of the fig, the sweetness of carobAnd a caravan of camels, laden with all good thingsBehold, the sunshine of my heart will returnAnd from there, he will bring an orangeSnow on my city, resting like a prayer shawlFrom the warm lands, what have you brought me?Snow on my city, snow on my faceAnd within the fruit are all my longings.....................I always find it amusing how people from the warmer parts of Israel regard Jerusalem as practically arctic. At least these last couple of days they've had some justification. Brr.

  1. runobodyii says Wow. What a beautiful song. The lyrics stand up well on their own as an English poem. The imagery is simple, elemental, but sensuous for all that: date and fig and carob, and then the bright and succulent orange set against the frigidity of snow, and then the way the fruit comes to embody longing. Probably my favorite image though is "Snow on my city, resting like a prayer shawl," how that image hallows the here and now, this place, this loneliness and longing for the warm hands. Thanks so much for posting this. Now I can go to sleep.

  2. runobodyii says I love knowing that it's snowing in Jerusalem. How often do you get snow there?

  3. runobodyii says Sounds a little like Virginia. The school cancellations start when snow is in the forecast, sometimes a good 24 hours before the first flake falls.
