Maturity in Music

Posted almost 5 years ago
I find myself more attracted to music with mature content and lyrics rather than catchy pop crap such as Panic! At The Disco. I am blown away by the transformation of Brand New from a moderately pop catchy band with their first CD "Your Favorite Weapon" to an intensely lyrically heavy and dark mature band that rocks. I think the fact that the masses are less mature and gravitate to immature music is the reason Brand New has not become as big as Fall Out Boy.Manchester Orchestra blows me away with their amazingly mature lyrics. It is true poetry. And it is hard to believe they average an age of 19. I am proud that there are smart people my age in the music business capable of writing such amazing words.Dashboard is another. Dashboard is a little more popular, since some of their music is a little poppy and less mature, focusing more on catchy lyrics rather than meaningful and deep lyrics. But much of it is very mature and deep, and I doubt many see this and can appriciate it. Otherwise, Dashboard would be one of the biggest bands of all time. Chris Carraba's writing is amazing. I truly connect on every level. That's how I feel about music these days. Fall Out Boy, Cute Is What We Aim For, Panic! At The Disco, all find their success with catchy wrd play and rhyming, rather than with substance. And the truly gifted bands with deep lyrics find less success, as the masses are not mature enough to appriciate it. But I don't suppose a 14 year old could grasp the idea of "Play Crack The Sky" by Brand New. I guess they are a victim of their own greatness. Oh well, Brand New will always have a cult following of diehard and educated fans.

  1. semicrazykari says okay to start off, i agree with you completely. brand new is just so, deep. ha, and as im typing this im listening to Sowing Season, go figure. anywho, once again, i concur. now on to some reggie, im a diehard fan who sadly isnt allowed to see any concerts, ugh. but oh well, i listen to him everyday, so somehow that makes up for it. :p. but a song that i reccomend would have to be "What The Hell Is Contempt" off of Songs Not to Get Married to. There are a lot more, but this is a gooden. i would say "ya dig?" but im bored with it already.

  2. semicrazykari says i am very jealous right now. but i do believe i read about that concert somewhere, i forget, and i was like, wow, that had to be a long venue. ha. i was hoping to see Reggie on the warped tour, but I'm pretty sure he's not on it this year. bummer. and yes, Jesse Lacey is God. I'm pretty sure i wrote that all over my planner from this school year. what a nerd i am

  3. semicrazykari says that just so happens to be one of my favorite songs from Deja Entendu. I sing it all the time, my friends have to be annoyed, haha. I'm hoping to get a tattoo of an anchor.. nothing too much to do with Brand New, I just love anchors. haha

  4. semicrazykari says wow. i couldn't have said it better myself. god, im so glad i found someone else who appreciates Brand New as much as i do. :) I was actually thinking of Play Crack the Sky when i wrote that last comment. Sometimes I just bust out and sing random Brand New songs, because I know all the lyrics, and believe me, that takes a lot of time, because those are some intricate lyrics. I've found that many of the lyric sites on the internet have the wrong ones, so I use the lyrics they posted on fightoffyourdemons.com, that's turned out to work well. p.s. the first time i heard Jesus Christ, i had cold chills. that's how much it impacted me

  5. semicrazykari says i really liked your video. :). great use of tautou. that songs means a lot to me, and its only a minute or so long. soco is also a gooden. but not my fav on your favorite weapon, that one would have to be The No Seatbelt Song. that one just rattles me up. you know? and i have to agree, Lacey is truly a poet. And very under appreciated in our society. There aren't a lot of song-writers that I can truly connect with, although Adam Lazzara wrote great songs on Tell All of Your Friends. but then comes my dilemma, because of "The Great Battle of TBS and BN". I think that fans just need to let the past go. Both bands have moved on, but it sure did make some great music with "There Is No 'I' in Team" and "Seventy Times 7". :)

  6. semicrazykari says I have a bag that says that same phrase, I love it, take it with me everywhere I go. I love Taking Back Sunday, but I'd like to think that their level of maturity went down with every cd they released, but hey thats just me. I love John and Michelle Nolan, and Straylight Run is definitely unique. I'd love to go see where they make such great musicians, As Tall As Lions also hail from Long Island, and although I've only heard a couple of tracks from that band, it proves that there must be something musical in the water over there. i dig. :)

  8. captheoldtimes says Yeah Manchester Orchestra are really good! I'm surprised they aren't bigger right now but maybe they're just starting out. Is it just me or does the singer sound a little like Conor Oberst in the screamier parts? You should post about the Brand New concert... they put on an incredible show.

  9. captheoldtimes says Hey can you take some pictures/video at the show? I just bought tickets to see Brand New in October (SO far away) and I'm super excited.. wonder if they will play with Manchester Orchestra again? That would be nice, I would actually pay them some attention this time..!

  10. soundsa-mazing says The first song I heard by Brand New was Jesus Christ, and I was absolutely stunned. I then listened to Play Crack The Sky, and again, AMAZING... So I downloaded a good amount of their songs, and then was a little thrown off by their older stuff...like you said, they've come a long ways from their all too familiar Fall Out Boy sounds [I'm definitely not a fan of FOB or Panic or any of those]. So I definitely think they have changed for the better. Lacey's voice in Jesus Christ slightly reminds me of Conor Oberst, which in my opinion is a good thing, and I think that really shows how far they've come. I also agree with what you said about Dashboard...I really love their less-generic stuff. Hooray for Brand New and Dashboard! haha
