Willie Nelson + Reggae = Train Wreck

Did anyone know that Willie Nelson has a Reggae album? I wish I was kidding, but this is serious business.

The back of the album reads: "10 years in the making, Willie's first Reggae album..." ok - I hope this is also his LAST raggae album, it's horrible.

I'm absolutely positive this was some Mary Jane-induced "good idea." It might have been a GREAT idea when you're munchin' on a batch of pot brownies, but when the haze clears, it's not so nice in real life.

This could explain why I only paid $1.
I think that was still too much though.

Stumbled Upon the Klaxons

I have a dirty little secret - I really have an obsession with the Brits. I mean, I really really love them in unhealthy proportions.

Warm beer? Ok by me! Crooked teeth? That's character for ya! Bland food? Actually, bangers and mash are fantastic.

So, this british craze extends into their music, obviously.

One of my random pickups from the Borders swag room was a Klaxons CD. It's delicious and has everything I love in music: poppy rock, uptempo, catchy riffs and beats. I can't believe I didn't discover them sooner.

So, my question for you all is... if I like the Klaxons, then I might also like...? Help

Works' Got Perks

I started working at the Borders HQ a few weeks ago and they have a room where the merchants drop off books and CDs twice a week. Employees get to peruse through all the goodies and select what interests them - free of charge.

I walked out with 14 CD's today. This is so awesome.

Music Beats Food

I caved.

After holding out for just 8 hours, I bought the Arcade Fire album. Apparently, Moggers agree that food is overrated - hey, I could stand to lose a few pounds anyway on that new peanut butter and jelly MOG diet.

UPDATE: Hop damn! Just when I thought I was utterly, completely poor, I received an email from my school saying they have a PAY CHECK waiting for me for some work that I did in December (which I didn't even know I was getting paid for!) This is truly serendipitous. Who knew??

Help.

Student loan funds are starting to dwindle and I still have 3 months until I start my full time job. No paychecks until June. I’m not kidding, I have $400, which is not going to get me through the next 3 months…

So why the hell am I buying music still???? My current predicament – buy the Arcade Fire album or eat? I’m leaning towards buying the album.

The weekend is nearing its end. You're probably depressed because the weather sucks, tomorrow is Monday, and you have to go back to the daily grind and a job you hate.

If you really find yourself in this scenario, then you need to listen to this song - the whole thing. Doctor's orders.

Finally - Music Slump OVER

I've been going through a music block lately. Really, there hasn't been too much out there that's caught my ear and I was really in a slump. I found these guys, The Films, through freeindie.com's January archives. God bless.

This is like a breath of fresh air, my friends. Good beats, catchy rhymes, fun tunes. Have a listen!

Looks like I will get to seem them at the Bowery Ballroom (my personal favorite spot to see live music) in May. Woo hoo! My brother will also be here visiting NYC for the first time ever, so I'll get to take him to my little Manhattan gem. Damn, May is going to be awesome - 3 concerts in 2 weeks, beloved family visiting, graduation from b-school. Sweet!

I know, it's been done, but whatever

I've got that Christmas Spirit! The only problem is that my apartment is SO SMALL that I cannot actually fit a tree of any size in the apartment (think "Manhattan Studio Apartment")... so, I bought two "Christmas tree" scented candles instead. Ya, New York sucks.

Anyway, Just thought I would suggest a few songs in case you haven't visited iTunes for some new music in a while:

"All I Want For Christmas" by Dirty Boyz
Carol of the Bells meets Compton

"Auld Lang Syne" by the Beach Boys
My list would be remiss without the Beach Boys. They do a good job with this one too.

"Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Dean Martin
Actually, it's raining and not that cold. BUT, this is New York and it was 14 degrees the other day. It's definitely coming. Luckily, I will be in the Caribbean in January!

"Blue Christmas" by Elvis
This is the only time Elvis is making any list of mine...

"Carol of the Bells" by friggin' everyone and their brother
My favorite holiday tune - they have an AMAZING display to this song outside Saks 5th Ave. Really, really amazing.

"Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses"
This definitely reminds me of Christmas in L.A. KROQ blasts this one all December long.

"Have a Holly Jolly Christmas" by Burl Ives
A total classic! A must for every Christmas collection.

"Little Saint Nick" by the Beach Boys
More Beach Boys. If you don't like these guys, there's always the Hanson version :)

"We Three Kings" by Fuel
The Fuel version is quite interesting... give it a try.

Did I Mention I really Like Ratatat

Tonight Ratatat played at the Guggenheim and they were amazing... even more amazing is the tee shirt I bought outside from their tour manager. Check it out:

Tap Tap

"Like a mix of Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, Arcade Fire, Beirut, and Wolf Parade"

...So that was the review I stumbled upon on iTunes and I was sold. Considering I like 3 of the 4 bands - a lot - I figured this was a good bet.

I am not disappointed a bit. The album is great. If you want to take a chance on a song or two, may I recommend:

1) 100,000 Thoughts or
2) To Our Continuing Friendship

Hop Damn those are good songs. Plus, is "Tap Tap" not an awesome band name?

I really like how they allow you to put the artwork at the forefront of your music experience. The art included in the CD was not being used very well within the iTunes player.... and since I don't really buy CD's anymore, I was starting to miss that.

Road Trip Music

On a 6 hour journey by train and car, I've discovered that the Beach Boys makes great road trip music:

1) All their songs are happy. If you're going on a road trip, you should be happy too, and if you're driving away from New York City (as I was) then you should be frickin ecstatic.

2) You probably know 95% of their songs - and if you're in the car with a non-Mogger, listening to music that others also know also creates a more enjoyable, shared experience.

3) They basically sing about chicks, surfing, and driving - or a combination of the three (such as surfing chicks). Now, really, who doesn't love that?

So if you're ever going to be driving for hours on end, add the Beach Boys to your playlist. You'll be glad you did.

This song is SO GOOD I can't wipe the smile off my face. Finally, something that rocks. I have been listening to country, cajun folk, and Japanese women singing spanish love ballads and literally DYING for something good to come out in the rock realm.

God bless ratatat. I really didn't want to end the summer in such a lull.

Yesterday I had a dream about Taylor Hicks. Not only is that random, it's just not right. And he was super pissed at me for some reason. Yeah.

I should be having dreams about Tom Brady, not Taylor Hicks.

Tom Brady: HOT

I'm a mut. My fiance's a mut. Our offspring are going to be the poster children for "Identity Crisis" - Irish, Korean, Spanish, Native American, and Scottish. They are going to be muts of muts.

Anyway, I have a love of all things mixed and today I discovered Lisa Ono, a Japanese woman who can sing spanish love ballads like Spanish was her native tongue - no accent at all.

So I looked her up in Wikipedia (best site ever) and turns out she's from Brazil, but is Japanese, and lives in each country 6 months of the year. I love that.

She's definitely said 'adios' to those pop roots and went for a very blues-y, yet modern, approach to this album.

La-La Songs

This could be totally random, but I love songs with good 'la-la's' in them. Lala's just scream FUN!!! And, they are easy lyrics to memorize. Here are a few of my favorite la-la songs:

Can't Get You Out of My Head - Kylie Minogue
Life is Wonderful - Jason Mraz
I Predict a Riot - the Kaiser Chiefs
For Tomorrow - Blur
40' - Franz Ferdinand
Walk Away - Franz Ferdinand
Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts - Wolf Parade

Turning into my mom

Every day I am getting more like my mom. I'm not complaining, it just means that I'm getting old (She is officially old, I am just on the way).

Well, it's her birthday on Thursday and, in true Mogger form, I bought her some music. Ever since I can remember, she's hated everything I like - but let's take this with a grain of salt, y'all; this is the woman who adores Clay Aiken and still raves about his Christmas album that came out like 2 years ago. Ya. And the new love of her life: Taylor Hicks. Anyway...

For her birthday I bought her Sonya Kitchell's album, "Words Came Back to Me," and Linda Ronstadt's new cajun-y album, "Adieu False Heart." Both are easy on the ears and lend well to the older folks.

And I own them both. You know you're gettin' old when you're diggin' the cajun lullabyes.

Oi.

UPDATE: oh yeah, and yesterday, I bought a Carpenters' album. If that doesn't automatically make me an old fogie, then I don't know what does.

Short Rant - I HATE TV commercials

No one wants to be sold to... that being said, there's also not too much that irks me more than seeing some of my favorite bands/songs peddling a lame product on TV. Here are the ads that bug me the most:

"AM Radio," Everclear - peddling GM
"I Turn My Camera On," Spoon - peddling Jaguars
"Such Great Heights" Iron & Wine - peddling M&M's
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow," Isreal Kamakawiwo'ole - peddling RICE KRISPIES

These songs are basically ruined for me now. They've been permanently cheapened (especially taking such a beautiful song and using it to sell Rice Krispies??!)

Corporations (especially the music labels and publishers) completely lack respect for 'the song' and a song's intent, it's message. I wonder if Isreal K. is turning over in his grave knowing his song is now the soundtrack for cereal. So sad. There's nothing in this wold that doesn't have a price.

Today's iTunes Purchases

so, it was a light itunes day for me... I guess music doesn't come out much on national holidays - hurts the sales a bit I'm sure. Either way, I got a few songs:

Johnny Cash: God's Gonna Cut You Down, Further Up On The Road, Love's Been Good to Me

Peaches - Downtown

LCD Soundsystem - Too Much Love (as recommended by lesterjonze)

The Presets - Girl and the Sea (Free on iTunes... dunno if I like it yet)

So far, really really diggin' "God's Gonna Cut You Down" by Johnny Cash.

At first, I was skeptical. Now, I've just jumped right in.

Oh, Wise iPod

According to my iPod, these are my most played tracks from 2006 album releases (in order from most played to least):

Arctic Monkeys:
- I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor
- From the Ritz to the Bubble
- 7
- The View from the Afternoon
- When the Sun Goes Down
- Fake Tales from San Francisco

Figurines - Back in the Day
Dixie Chicks - Lullaby
Landon Pigg - Dressed to Kill
The Strokes - Heart in a Cage (the guitar in this song ROCKS)
Blue October - Congratulations
Hard-Fi - Cash Machine
Nobody & The Mystic Chords of Mystery - Broaden a New Sound
Hard-Fi - Gotta Reason
The Raconteurs - Steady As She Goes

Apparently, I was listening to a lot of Arctic Monkeys in the last few months but I'm over them I think... for now anyway. And if Tapes 'n Tapes' The Loon was from '06, it would definitely be on there.

YouTube isn't Just Amazing - It's Tricky

Where was YouTube when I was 14!? Check out the curly-haired cutie at :28.

Or, if you want the real deal:

Is it me, or is this song so awesome?

So, this feature does not work well with my collection. Mog recognizes about 6 songs and the rest it completely ignores. Anyway, I think I'll wait for some mogger upgrades before I start using it again.
