MOG MOG

WHERE E=MC HAMMER

Ok, if you haven't heard of them, and you like Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and any of the other folkies, then Johnny and the Moon is your new favorite band. I promise.

The self-titled album is the debut of the wonderfully exuberant folk band fronted, incidentally, by Dante DeCaro of Wolf Parade. And formerly of Hot Hot Heat. Johnny and the Moon is yet another Canadian indie smash, and arguably, being Canadian, and an indie band is just about the best thing to be in the music industry right now. If, of course, you are actually in it for the music, as so few people actually are these days.

Honestly, what can I say, this album is amazing, it plays like something straight out of the Newport Folk Festival, with Dylan nodding in the background. The foursome artfully blends classic folk tunes with an infusion of classic rock, banjo, harmonica, and an air of the 60s. Albeit, the disc contains more rock mainstays than any solid folkie would allow, but this kind of neo-classic amalgamation is something that people these days are digging. And I gotta say I dig it too. I dig it a lot.

So, play on Dante.

It was released in Canada on October 24th, but probably won't be available in stores in the States until...well who the fuck knows. A long ass time. However, it is available online at Kill devil hills., the label's website. In my opinion dropping $12 on a neo-folk CD as good as this one...is pretty much a no-brainer. Plus the shipping's free, so that should make the decision a lot easier.

Really, what have you got to lose?

P.s. It has gotten the seal of approval from Pitchfork...if you were wondering. 7.0

Thanks for the review! I've only heard a song or two from them but will be sure to get the CD! It seems that Dante can do little wrong, musically speaking.
