WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Ok. So.

I just heard the single "Tarantula" from Smashing Pumpkins new album Zeitgeist. All I can say is "Ew. Ew. Ew. Go back to the 90s." Yeesh, what a crappy track. It's got like seventeen guitar solos and it's only 4 minutes long. God. VOMITPlus, I don't know if you've heard about their clever marketing plan...(which is most likely to ensure the album's monetary success, as well as simultaneously bleed lifelong Pumpkin fans dry.) They are releasing four different versions of the album. (One at Best Buy, One on iTunes, One at Target, and I guess one that you can pre-order) But, the catch is, each has a different bonus track. So, let's just say you're a faithful Pumpkins fan, you haven't had a new album since what...2000? And you're just itching to get your hands on any and all new Pumpkins tracks. Well, tell you what, pal. That's gonna be a solid 40 bucks. AT LEAST. At the very least. Surely, some greasy-haired waifs in their 30s will stroll in, looking like they haven't stopped rocking in 20 years, and say, "Whatever man. IT'S THE PUMPKINS DUDE" And gladly slap the wad of dirty bills down. Then of course, take their Sonic Youth shirt wearing, living in the 90s ass out to their truck and commence the rocking out. But others. (The ones who grew up. Or the intelligent ones.) Will take it for what it is: a fucking scam And, with any luck, boycott the entire album.I've never liked Billy Corgan. Not at all. Never cared for his bald whining. And this makes me care even less. But it also makes me laugh. Laugh at the fact, that the very face of the alt-rock subculture has now become the very face of corporate corruption and money-grubbing--blatantly exploiting the Pumpkins' popularity and fanbase to squeeze a few more bucks outta their endearing pockets. My guess, and hopefully the universe will back me up on this one, is that the album will totally flop. Based on declining record sales and the upwards mobility of illegal downloading, I'd say the album will sell somewhere between 800k and 1 mil copies. At best. Not to mention the fact that people who were fans of the Pumpkins, in the 90s, are probably the exact people who upload and download files on P2P networks, and assuming the album leaks at least a week in advance (and it most definitely will, if it hasn't already), this downloading will put a HUGE dent in the amount of sales. Which, as fate would have it, would ironically make a bust of this cleverly conceived plan to hoodwink people into buying more than one CD.Suckers.SUCK IT BILLY CORGAN. YOUR BAND BLOWS. HAHA!

  2. Lester Jonze says I can't even try to think about this whole Pumpkins thing, it ain't them, it ain't Pumpkins music, and it ain't right. And it damn sure ain't 1993 again.

  6. Augusts1 says How is it that few other moggers seem to know that this kind of marketing has been done by many other bands for years? Obviously Pitchfork has a personal vendetta out for The Pumpkins since their HQ is in Chicago. Sounds like typical Pumpkins music from what I've heard so far, which I like. Let's face it, The Pumpkins were really Billy all along, so their current sound isn't that different. Btw, how many people you know would buy a cd 4 times over just to get the bonus songs on each. No one I know & no one I know could afford to do that. I love The Pumpkins but certainly not interested in buying the same cd 4 times. Seems like Pumpkin's hating is extremely in vogue especially when an indie rag like Pitchfork is singling them out for doing marketing that so many other bands have done before. This marketing isn't something new. Off the top of my head, I know that Bloc Party, U2 & The Killers have done this before. So what.

  7. Bwentman says So what? The Pumpkins suck balls, that's what's so what. And it just gives me another reason to hate the shit out of Billy Corgan and his crappy music. Plus, you and I both know damn well that it doesn't matter who "you know" or who "I know" I know plenty of people that wouldn't even give a damn if the Pumpkins were gunned down on the street in broad daylight. Jesus, even though I can't think of anyone who actually wants a Pumpkins CD to begin with, I can think of about a million who are actually going to buy it. I also know plenty of people who don't want to see a Paul W.S. Anderson flick, read a Nicholas Sparks novel, or ever hear Hilary Duff's voice ever again, in anything...but wouldn't you fucking know it, they just keep shoving that shit right down our throats EVERY FUCKING DAY. Surprise! Surprise! Jeez, why don't they just listen to the people I know. Oh wait, I remember....it's because our opinion doesn't matter. We're in the upper-echelon of the intelligence in this country, which automatically puts us in the minority. Which also automatically gives us our own subculture. And, here's another thing you and I both know: Mainstream does not cater to subcultures. It panders to the masses. (Honestly, not to toot my own horn...or yours for that matter. ) So, let's go ahead and be blunt about it. There are a TON of stupid people out there, you and I know it, they know it. Everybody fucking knows it. You can't stand there and tell me that advertising in this country isn't directly geared at people whose opinions are very easily swayed by shiny colors, a pretty face, and a big pair of tits. And out of every 20-30 of those, there's probably one or two who would gladly tack on another 10 or 15 hours a week at their dead end jobs just to buy four copies of the newest Smashing Pumpkins album. Also, Pitchfork wrote one fucking article about this shit. I'd hardly call "Pumpkins bashing" the newest, biggest trend in the indie world. In any world. I think, pretty much, no one could give two shits about what the Smashing Pumpkins do. P.S. The only reason any such stink was raised in the first place, is because it's such a high-profile release. And it's covered by all the "indie rags" as well as EVERY OTHER FUCKING MUSIC/ENTERTAINMENT RELATED PUBLICATION. The people who were listening to the Pumpkins when they were kids, are the ones who are writing for these magazines now. Tell you what, I'd be pissed too if one of my favorite bands broke up, then seven years later got back together, made a new album, and then tried to suck 40 bucks out of my pocket just for the full experience. There's absolutely no positive way to spin it. Absolutely none. From any angle it looks exactly like a corporate move--a money move. And if being ripped off is "in vogue"....then I guess everybody's in on this trend. And has been for a while.

  9. Augusts1 says So if you hate Billy so fuckin' much why do you bother to post about them at all. You must have liked the Pumpkins at some time in the past to become so vehemently against them & spend time posting about how much you hate them. It's just cracks me up how you wrote a long ass response to my comment. If you truly hated the Pumpkins like you say you do then why bother to expend the energy? Sure Billy *IS* an egomaniac & has done some dumbass stuff the last few years but he still has an amazing talent & that will not change. And so many other bands move on w/o all the original members. I've been a fan since they put out their first cd "Gish" & through the years their music has been a big part of my life. I have all their cds & love their sound although it took me awhile to get all their cds. But I'm also not going to run out & buy this new cd. I want to hear it first to make sure it's really worthy of buying. Besides, I rarely go buy any artists new cd(there are a few like Radiohead that I do) right away since I have so much music in my collection. Anyway, chill Mr. B, it's just music. We can agree to disagree(although I do agree w/alot of what you stated in your reply to me above). In 6 months time it more than likely won't even matter!

  11. Augusts1 says Ok if you say so. But I think you were secretly exposed to the Pumpkins as a child too. Probably why you were an angry child, lol!

  14. Bwentman says Haha. I know. I didn't have a bad childhood. All I did was eat ice cream and watch Ninja Turtles. Until I was like...17.
