MOG

This above is why I'm so sad. It was also the reason that I've been so happy. Happy until today, that is. Above is the cover of the Swan Lake album, Beast Moans. For those of you who don't know about Swan Lake, well, it's an indie-supergroup of sorts made up of these gentlemen.

These gentlemen are as follows, from left: Dan Bejar (of Destroyer), Carey Mercer (of Frog Eyes), and Spencer Krug (of Wolf Parade/Sunset Rubdown/Frog Eyes). So you notice a pattern? Yes, these three men all belong to an amazing indie band and each contains a tour de force of song-writing ability. These three men are perhaps the strongest songwriters of our generation. And amalgamated together under one studio roof, well my God, that's music's version of a fucking typhoon. How could I have not been excited about this?

But. I'll save you the suspense of unwrapping the package and suspecting something fantastic from this CD. Something otherworldly. Because, there's nothing special about this record. And I'm fucking depressed. That's right. I had high expectations for this record, and it fucked me in the ass. Fucked RIGHT in the ass. I was thinking "Spencer, Dan, Carey, guys, don't fuck me in the ass" But they did. THEY FUCKED ME IN THE ASS.

I don't know what it is. But, every song just seems cramped, almost cacophonous in it's grandiosity. Like every member just needed to do their own thing every song, and do it for the entire song. And it ended up coming out more crowded than the ball pit at a 6 year olds birthday party. It's not that the songwriting wasn't there. You can hear the greatness, but it's trapped. Carey, Dan, and Spencer. Three of my favorite men on the entire planet right now, split apart have never made a bad record. Years and years of indie experience between them. It took their joining together for a fall from grace.

Perhaps they didn't have enough time. I know Spencer's been on the road with Frog Eyes, Wolf Parade, AND Sunset Rubdown. Plus he was making an LP with Sunset Rubdown. Carey's been touring. Dan's been touring, plus he had an album drop this year too. Which makes me think. How long did it actually take them to make this record? 2 months....3? What if they'd had double that? Triple that? Christ...I can't even think about it.

I just...I'm so sad right now. sigh Maybe upon further listens my callousness will abate. But I'm not expecting it too.
