Allll right kids. It's getting close to that time again. Christmas is only 36 more days away and as soon as that dirty turkey and stuffing clears the table we can start thinking about what really matters. The shit we're getting for Christmas.I know, I know. 36 days is a long ass time. But. The Sufjan Stevens Christmas album is coming out on the 21st. And that's only two days away. So. It's like Christmas and it should quell the searing pain of the waiting, as well as boost your Christmas spirits! Who's excited about Sufjan!!?? HM??!!!
This'll be his second release this year, and honestly I'm so much more excited about SFC than I was about Avalanche. I tend to hate it when bands do the whole "Outtakes and Rarities" schtick. In some cases I can see how it could serve as just a meager album to tide the fans over until the release of a new one. But, in most cases, it turns out to just be a ploy by the label to rake in some more cash. However, this Songs for Christmas album seems a bit like a rarities CD, and the songs are rarities, but not just junk tossed away from Michigan or Illinois. It's a little bit different. He was recording these songs for himself. Since 2001, he recorded an EP during the Christmas season and distributed it amongst friends and relatives.--"To appreciate Christmas more" And that's awesome. He didn't have profit in mind. He didn't have his listeners in mind. Just himself. And when an artist does something like this, it becomes a veritable window into their soul, and that's great too. We get to see how he thought the songs should be mixed and arranged. What instruments should go where and how they should sound. It's so personal. Really, it's the next best thing, behind peeking into Sufjan's studio, with an ear to the snow frosted window, watching while he records. And I think it's a wonderful release. Kind of a personal connection to the fans and listeners. They know why he did it, and now they get to know what it sounds like. It's almost like an interview with no writer, in musical form, sent out to everyone. I don't know about you, but I can't wait to hear Sufjan's take on the standard Christmas catalog. Plus, his new songs. Maybe I'll find a certain new Christmas favorite and make it a holiday tradition. So, if you're a Sufjan fan. Or a Christmas fan. You should probably invest in this album. Or...steal it."Songs for Christmas":http://www.asthmatickitty.com/music.php?releaseID=63.
