Uh huh.

Pet Sounds may essentially be the most perfect pop record of the past 50 years. If not of all time. If there ever was an album that was more perfect than this, please tell me. Because, I would fucking love to listen to it. I mean, I guess I always knew this to be true. I just had to figure it out for myself. I always heard people ejaculating praise onto Pet Sounds. But, I never understood. But now I do. You can't just praise Pet Sounds. You have to ejaculate praise upon it. It's just that fucking good.Brian Wilson has my heart. And he always will.In a completely un-homosexual way, of course.P.s. If anybody knows where I can get some SMiLE bootlegs, let me know. Like any kinds of session tapes, outtakes, etc.

  1. dermahrk says I assume you know there was a multiple-CD box set issued of the Smile sessions - I think Rhino may've made this. Anyway, it's not a bootleg and sounds like it would be your touchstone. Yes, the Beach Boys (Wilsons) are fantastic. I love seeing Brian on the road and functioning. Too bad about Carl. He's really the one that started my (late) collecting of the B-Boys. Another incredible voice. And of course, as always, fuck Mike Love.

  3. Heli0tr0pe says Yeah yeah - fuck Mike Love. The Republican of the band, of course... I missed Brian at UCLA last night for cashflow reasons, but I did see the first "Pet Sounds" show at the Hollywood Bowl, what, 6 years ago? He's gotten better and better as a live performer since then, especially since the 100% triumph of the "SMiLE" album and tour, and so many of his demons being out to bed as a result. The recent 40th anniversary (fuzzy-covered) "Pet Sounds" is worth getting - despite being the 5th edition on CD - because of the new 5.1 mix and the docs. I think it can be found for well under $20 if you look carefully. I still haven't gotten the big box, though - I need to do that... But as much as I adore "Pet Sounds," what I REALLY want now is the "SMiLE Sessions" box set, which was first proposed about 15 years ago. Now that Brian has put his own very wonderful version of "SMiLE" into the world, there is still one final frontier, one last river to cross...to try to make some sense of the old tapes...or not...but please release them in some form. Pretty please!) Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting I have 3 different high-quality "SMiLE" boots on CD. Send me a Mogmail to discuss further. God bless Brian!

  4. Heli0tr0pe says One last note: following the track list on the 2004 "SMiLE", it is possible to construct about a good 3/4 or so of the "original" album (whatever that means), using the Beach Boys material that appears on the "Good Vibrations" box set, "Smiley Smile," "20/20" and other LPs where certain tracks appeared, and maybe some bootleg stuff too. Only problem is, unfortunately, that a few great songs (or song fragments, anyway) were not inclded in 2004, such "With Me Tonight," "You're Welcome," "She's Goin' Bald" etc...but hey. The man lived to finish the thing in some form, and I don't take that for granted at all. Look here for how a real super-psycho fan (not me) would construct his version of "SMiLE": http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Studio/7491/albums/mysmile.html Also, the "SMiLE" DVD is totally amazing and essential. The doc is a classic and the live performance is pure perfection. And finally, a funny story of the Wikipedia "SMiLE" page: "Despite the 'unspoken rivalry' between The Beatles and the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney were good friends during this time and remain so today. As a result of this friendship, McCartney made a guest appearance on 'Smiley Smile.' He can be heard eating a carrot during 'Vegetables.' This led to an amusing story years later, as a Los Angeles radio station (Breakfast With The Beatles on 97.1 KLSX-FM) was giving away a prize to the first caller who could correctly answer the question, 'What Beach Boys' song does Paul McCartney appear on?' Dozens called in with wrong answers, until finally McCartney himself (who, at the time, was in Los Angeles recording the 'Chaos and Creation in the Backyard' album) called in and won the prize."
