I've been a big Decemberists fan for a while, and so I had high hopes for their new CD. And The Crane Wife is exactly what I was hoping for. It feels like the natural next step from Picaresque, a change in style that keeps the best of their old stuff and gets even more catchy. Basically, I'm having fanboigasms all over the CD.The standout tracks on the album fall in to two categories: there are the epic, meandering, 12-minute long successors to Picaresque's "The Mariner's Revenge Song," which are more serious, better instrumented, and just generally better than their predecessor, and there are the tracks that draw from the style behind "16 Military Wives." "The Perfect Crime 2," for example, has been living in my head for the past week, and its groove refuses to leave."When the War Came" and "Sons and Daughters" are similar, in that they have the catchiness of really good pop, while retaining the lyrical depth and musical weirdness that make the Decemberists so interesting. If you love the Decemberists, you should buy this CD. If you don't, buy this CD anyway, it will convert you with its beauty. And if you haven't heard them before, well, no time like the present.

  1. max says i love how much play the Decemberists are getting here on MOG, it's funny, but it's the one place that I don't mind where everyone else knows the music I love, but it sheltered from a good portion of the population (though the decemberists are really not very unknown anymore)...in any case a great album and an amazing band, for sure one of my favorites (i'm even wearing their shirt right now)

  2. blueone51 says On a 4-hour drive from Ann Arbor to Chicago I did something I haven’t done in a long. After listening to the The Crane Wife for the first time I immediately played it again. I was completely amazed by the complexity, texture and brilliance of the album. The mix of styles and forms is remarkable. I think I’ll listen to it right now.
