Merry Un-X-Mas!

There are few songs in the materialist state of Christmas that really speak to the ideas of what the Holiday could be about. Two songs that really remind me of this fact are Bill Withers' "Let Us Love", and Motown's standard "Someday at Christmas". Though songs shrug off the traditions of Christmas music, both in tone and content, they also speak to a challenge that lies before even the most devout Christian. Does it matter if one is a Christian, if one lives a life that is truly Christ-like? If we are the keepers of his sheep, and the tender of his flock, then is it not of utmost importance that we feed the hungry, and defend the defenseless? If not, does the Holiday even matter?

I think Withers answer this question clearly. Every day is the day to show your loved ones you love them. There's no telling what tomorrow may bring you. If you're fortunate enough to be someplace warm, with someone you love, tell them. You never know when it might be your last chance.

Of all of the versions of "Someday At Christmas", the version by the Jackson 5, though not the most musically accomplished, is far and away the most touching. Hearing the Black version of Michael Jackson piping out a call for peace and a world where men, "won't play with bombs like kids play with toys", is as relevant now as when it was released in 1972. Though it was a Berry Gordy production, and clearly from the mind of a pimp, the message sung from the mouths of babes truly reminds us what Christmas should be.

May all the soldiers in all the wars, here and overseas, find some peace this year.
