Mixed Feelings About Evil Nine's "Auto"

Posted about 1 year ago

Now I'm a huge Evil Nine fan, especially after 2008's zombie themed "They Live!" album, however there's something about this new single "Auto" that gets under my [rotten] skin.

The song pulls you in, you can't help but to bob your head as it builds up to the chorus--but then something unexpected happens. A minute and a half into the song you hear a chorus that sounds remarkably similar to Daft Punk's "Technologic." While the chorus in Auto goes something like "fall back, reset, default, automatic"--and surely it's ridiculously catchy--I can't help but think of Technologic's "buy it, use it, break it, fix it, trash it, change it, mail--upgrade it." Now I know that all artists take sips from a shared pool of creativity, but to me this seems like Evil Nine is taking a huge gulp.

There is also this strange interlude in the middle of the song that sounds like preset vocal noises being played on a keyboard--I can actually visualize fingers striking keyboard keys during this interlude. Despite all my criticism toward this particular song, I still love Evil Nine, but I'll probably just go back to listening to "They Live!"
