WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Morcheeba

Posted over 2 years ago
This is one of my favorite cds ever. It's too bad that Morcheeba didn't continue in this acoustic hip-hop vein (their releases since this cd have been quite different - more like Jamariqui disco, than mellow acoustic hip-hop). "Love and Fear" is a particular favorite because of the lyrics and orchestration. I hope Morcheeba continue and release something more along the style of "The Big Calm" in the future.

  1. White and Nerdy says Oh wow, this is kinda funny. Flashback, for me! It used to be that I had to play this band when I was doing college radio (it was on rotation). I haven't thought about this band for YEARS. I never really got into them, just not my style. I used to wonder "is this a band that peopleactually CHOOSE to listen to?" I just didn't get it. I think this is one of those bands that is sadly way ahead of their time. Anyways, I'm glad to see that there are people out there diggin' this stuff...even though I don't.

  2. gcincinnati says I abolutely agree. The releases since then haven't really lived up to 'Big Calm'. It's one of my favorites by far as well. One of those CD's that you just NEVER get tired of. Have you heard Skye's 'Mind How You Go'? It's not quite Morcheeba, but that voice will do it for me every time.

  3. Vince says I really really like this band, though I don't think this is their best release. If you haven't done so yet, you HAVE to listen to the first one "Who can you trust". By far one of the best albums I own. More experimental, her voice is much better on this first one. Too bad they didn't really follow their first influences. I think they got changed by their success... Check out "Trigger Hippie" on the first album... I agree on the fact that they were way ahead on their time, but on "who can you trust", not on "Big calm". And what happened after is not even worth mentioning... sadly...

  4. River Lethe says Ah, the demise of trip-hop, a genre I love when it doesn't de-volve into melodramatic smaltz. This is a great album, as is the first. There are good moments on the later albums, but as a whole, they never matched the early ones (I stopped listening after the vocalist left). What happened to this genre? Why didn't it survive the millennium? Portishead, Esthero, Tricky, Morcheeba, Baxter, Lamb, Sneaker Pimps. All great bands, but those that lasted, changed their formulas.

  5. Brett Schieber says River Lethe - I agree 100% about the demise of trip-hop. I love that style of music and still do (check out Arcanum). I suppose that it was the last style of music that was really inovative and doing something new and experimental. But, one never knows what's around the corner....I can only hope for a rebirth! Vince - Yes, I have "Who Can You Trust?" too. I like it, but not as much as "The Big Calm". To each their own though! I agree about their later cds though. It makes me sad. Gcincinnati - I've never heard Skye's solo music. I'll definitely be checking into it. Thanks! White and Nerdy - I chose to listen, and I still do;-) I'm glad you can appreciate it though and I'm glad to hear that they were in rotation anywhere at all. I've never heard them on the radio.

  6. Bob3743 says Hm...I must be one of the few that likes all their works to include the The Antidote... without Skye. I'll admit though that The Antidote took some getting used to since I was definately addicted to Skye's voice.
