is obviously The Weakerthans. And I've been waiting for what feels like ages for new music to satisfy my addiction. Finally, it's here! The band's new single, Civil Twilight, was released just the other day and I couldn't be more thrilled! It's a little bit more upbeat and pop-rocky than their usual fare but in no way is that a bad thing. For starters, it's catchy as hell (in a good way) and John K. Samson can do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned. To make matters even more delicious, I just got tickets to see them at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston in November! Lately, The Weakerthans rarely venture out of Canada and it seems like when they do, they seldom tour the Northeast. So, basically, I'm pumped.
If you're a Weakerthans virgin, I suggest you check out the following tracks. You won't regret it:
"My Favourite Chords" (from the album Left & Leaving) "This Is A Fire Door Never Leave Open" (from Left & Leaving) "Reconstruction Site" (from Reconstruction Site) "Psalm for the Elks Lodge Last Call" (from Reconstruction Site)
I just got a new cell phone and, of course, I have to get all new ring tones. AT&T has a surprisingly good selection of music tones (still impossible to find a lot of indie/underground bands, though) but I need some help. What ring tones do you have? What are favorites?
So far, I've got "Vibrate" by Rufus Wainwright, "Running Away" by The Polyphonic Spree, "Fidelity" by Regina Spektor, and Simon & Garfunkel - "Mrs. Robinson". I also have Feist - "1234" and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - "Oregon Girl" as my Answer Tones (you know, the songs other people hear when they call you). But my collection is far from complete and I could use some advice/insight. I'm thinking maybe some Nirvana, a little Violent Femmes, some Ben Folds, Flaming Lips....? Any thoughts? Help me out, guys.
But am I the only one who can't stand this song???? I promised myself I'd try to accept this new musical direction that Rilo Kiley has taken but I didn't expect it to be so goddamn hard! I miss the lovely, slightly quirky, introspective, witty, intelligent lyrics! I miss the emotional intensity! I just can't do the tacky disco sleaze! What can I say? I guess I'm just an indie kid at heart. With that said, I am developing a certain level of appreciation for the song "Silver Lining"... In part, because there's nothing more depressing than a brand new Rilo Kiley album full of songs that I just can't get into... I respect the band for trying something different but it's just not my cup o' tea.
But at least I've got Rabbit Fur Coat...

I'm in the same boat, BNS. the new album is glossy, for sure. Jenny and the Watsons was SUCH a great album, and the new rilo kiley just doesn't come that close at all.
Thank God I'm not alone on this one! I love Jenny to death but the new album just feels really.... contrived?

I love my ring tone. My phone can play an mp3 as a ring tone, so I have Louis Armstrong's "Potato Head Blues".
Brilliant idea! I should check and see if my phone does that... I know it plays mp3s but I'm not sure if I can use them as ring tones... I'll have to check it out! Thanks!
Hung Up by Madonna - if only for the fact that it rings - waiting for your call baby night & day... kills me anytime I hear it !!!
Also have Deeper Underground... that's always fun to hear when it rings.
