YOU CAN'T NOT GET NO SATISFACTION

The Monkees

Posted over 2 years ago
The Monkees, and especially Michael Nesmith, have been my secret music love affair since 1986 when I moved from Texas to Salt Lake City, and went to a Monkees concert at the local theme park with my family. My siblings and I scrounged up enough change to buy tickets to the show (but not without a healthy donation from the old lady next door) and my father was pleased to take us to our favorite bands reunion tour (minus Michael Nesmith....bummer.) He knew how much we loved the Monkees. I mean, who else had kids pretending to be Peter, Michael, Micky and Davy after school each day?Michael Nesmith's post-Monkees solo career produced a lot of catchy tracks, and some goofy movies. My father actually met him at one of Nesmith's movie premiers. Anyway, in thinking about that concert and how inspirational it was, but almost being ashamed to have this secret Monkee love, I thought I'd open up to my fellow moggers.I can't be the only dirty Monkee out there.....

  2. chucky says Haha. Because you were so brave I will admit that I also saw the Monkees in concert. I'm sure it was the same tour you saw. It was my first concert - I even think I had it on my first concert widget when I first joined mog, but later deleted it out of embarrasment.

  3. Kiddo says I never saw the Monkees in concert, but I as a kid I would watch old Monkees reruns on Nickelodeon. I was secretly in love with Davy Jones and used to play my mom's old 45s of the Monkees ALL the time. At the time I remember thinking, "The guys are SO much better than the Beatles ever were! Why can't everybody else see that?!" Well, that sentiment didn't last, but such was my blind devotion to the band at the time. I even bought a cassette of one of their old concerts. Years later, I purchased their Greatest Hits CD, and I do still enjoy listening to it. So yes, you aren't alone in your Monkee love, and I envy you for actually seeing them in concert!

  5. lemontwist says Ha! Awesome. My boyfriend loves the Monkees. I heard that Steven Stills wanted to be a Monkee and was really bummed out when he didn't make it. Probably for the better, his work with Buffalo Springfield and CSN(Y) was pretty ass kickin'.

  6. Boz of SLC says Oh thanks Chucky! The Monkees tour is the first concert widget I added when I first joined MOG!!! And its still there! Should I delete it? I am so blushing right now..... :] Hey Kiddo, being the young whipper snapper that I was in 86, seeing the Nesmith-less Monkees in concert was just about as cool as it gets!

  7. amber says oh, you are all so very young--The Monkees were over even when I was a teenager. That didn't stop me from loving them in re-runs though! My favorite song of theirs: I'm Gonna Buy me a Dog (or something like that)---I still know all the words and was singing it at work about a month ago. Got weird looks from all, but hey, Day Dream Believer wasn't their only song!

  8. janahale says Don't be ashamed of your secret Monkee love. They were my first favorite band, and one year my friends got me tickets to their concert for my birthday. When they came out (it was only Davy and Mickey) I had a single tear! Don't tell anyone... And at least your first concert wasn't New Kids on the Block.

  9. Iren says I have thier greatest hits, and will maintain that they hold up a lot better than some of the bands that were mocking them at the time.... Country Joe anyone...... pre-fab what ever... hell there have been more than a few great bands that were formed the same way... The Runaways come to mind...

  10. fairportfan says All of you guys are mere infinks. I was in my Junior/Senior years in high school when the Monkees were on teevee. My first wife and i went to that '86 tour - what i loved about it (and it might not have been obvious to those of you in your teens at the time) was how tight the show was, but how it just *seemed* like a bunch of old friends goofing tegether. That is the mark of true professionalism, and it was a good show. My favourite moment was when they'd done a number in costume - i think that was the one where Mickey wound up in Carmen Miranda-type drag - and while Mickey and Pete were off stage changing back, Davy got back fiorst and was sitting down on the front edge of the stage playing quirely on an acoustic guitar. Peter comes out. "David," he says "what are you doing?" "Playing the intro to the next song," Davy answers. "David, are you not aware that it is a well-established fact that Monkees can't play their onw instruments?" "O, yeh - I know that." (And how many either remember or can guess the punchline?) As Pete glances out over the audience with an "I-Guess-I-Told-Him!" expression, Davy takes exactly the right beat and says: "This is Mickey's guitar."
