"A Strange Kind Of Love...So Potent, So True, So Well Written..." by Bolafeld

A very simple song that shines lyrically and instrumentally. It is powerful in the way his amazing, deep, almost Neil Diamond-like-voice-minus-cheeziness projects past his accent and squarely puts the amazing complexity of a love-hate relationship into focus. Considering Peter Murphy, this is probably not the only meaning in the song. Songwriters of his type/caliber tend to use multiple meanings, usually 2-3, to where there is obvious surface meaning, clandesting meaning, and sometimes an even deeper esoteric or personally secret meaning... Anyway, after the guitars finish their second lyric-less refrain you hear that wonderful sounding synth horn in a simple, soothing melody, almost telling you that if you have been unlucky enough to experience the subject matter, as I have, that somehow it's all gonna be all right. As I do many compositons based on simple acoustic guitar, this song has always been an inspiration to me in the way that a song can be so simple, yet so complex, with such sparse sounds. This is a personal favorite of mine to throw into an acoustic set as an occasional cover, though nobody usually recognizes it (I make sure everyone knows exactly where it came from and his connections to Bauhaus! Maybe even throw in the fact that I met Mr. Murphy on his last tour, and he comes across like a confident Buddhist monk or something!). The real challenge to this song is the vocals. On my best nights I hit all of the lows with perfect timbre...on my worse, I move my capo up a few frets! I keep the guitar on simple chords, which gives it a more modern folk rock feel and hum/sing the horn parts...which to be honest, I wish Peter would try sometime, because I love the way it sounds with the guitar (when I'm "wearing" his voice), but even better with the synth as well! There are a few versions of this song, the single/video being very different in feel I think, and the album version, in my opinion, is hands down the best. Check it out! Another great one on "Deep" is the famous "Cuts You Up," known at the time for an innovative string lead and amazing beat! Be sure to listen to it next! Then you better find my favorite Peter Murphy song of all time, "Socrates The Python" from the album "Love Hysteria." It may take you a couple listens, but you will see, I think, at least why I consider it one of the most amazing songs written!
