So this list comes to you all late. I try to compile a list in some form or another every year. This year it comes late partially because I am swamped with work and personal projects and partially because it was a damn good year for music. Without further ado here is my list.

10. Silversun Pickups 9. Justin Timberlake - Futuresex/Lovesounds 8. Girl Talk-Night Ripper 7. J-Dilla - The Shining 6. TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain 5. José González -Veneer 4. The Roots - Game Theory 3. Nas - Hip-Hop Is Dead 2. Hi-Tek - Hi-Teknology 2: The Chip 1. Band of Horses - Everything All The Time

VERY CLOSE RUNNERS UP Alice Smith - For Lovers Dreamers And Me Robin Thicke - The Evolution of Robin Thicke John Legend - Once Again Arctic Monkeys -Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Robin Thicke - The Evolution of Robin Thicke Fujiya & Miyagi - Transparent things

HONORABLE MENTION John Mayer - Continuum Motohiro Nakashima - I Dreamt Constellation Sang Tommy Guerrero - From The Soil To The Soul Mogwai - Mr. Beast

This was way harder than I thought it would be but I am confident in my choices. What do you guys think? I am sure many will disagree with me. I welcome all comments.

Thanks -Bmar

Nice list.

The Nas and Hi-Tek are highly questionable.

But it's nice otherwise.

I see you got hip hop's finest up there. And I'm mentally pushing Arctic Monkeys up to reach your top ten :)

Artist: Nas/ N Album: Hip Hop is Dead Track: Blunt Ashes, Money Over Bullshit, Still Dreaming, Let There Be Light, Hustlers, Can't Forget About You.

I happen to run across this advance album and it is not just the best hip-hop album this year but the best in years. Nas brings the absolute FIRE. Blunt Ashes which is surprisingly well produced by the Sixers own Chris Webber is an amazing cut that starts with Nasir posing the question “Yo, I wonder if Langston Hughes and Alex Haley got blazed before they told stories?”

Still Dreaming which is a soul heavy track that sees Kanye West in his rarest of forms producing as well as lending vocals to the hook, and Chrisette Michele with her buttery voice, is smooth all the way through and is home to my favorite line on the album coming from NAS “How you a man waiting for the next man to get rich/ your plan is to stick out your hand real quick/ so if he feed your family and he serve you shit/ then he need that head you get and he deserve your bitch.” Words couldn’t be positioned any more perfect and the message couldn’t be any clearer, stand on your own two and make your own way.

Hustlers is NAS sharing a track with The Game and thank whoever you pray to that he is. This track is BANANAS. West and East coast merge wonderfully on this track like a bottle of 1990 Latricieres Chambertin, Leroy and a hollowed out Philly filled with the finest.

And I could never forget about the instantly catchy and BEAUTIFUL Can’t Forget About You which features the same young woman with the silky voice that is featured on Still Dreaming and Jay-Z’s Lost Ones track, Chrisette Michele. The song also successfully samples Nat King Coles Unforgettable is an instant gem that sees Nas painting a picture of what the future might possibly hold for him, those who have paved the way in the game of Hip-hop, and his present self, feelings and thoughts. Truly “a life long anthem.” If you love old school Nas and Hip Hop this is one that will hopefully redefine what HIP-HOP really is.

Artist: Album: Track:

I came across this band, and how glad I am that I did. They have a perfect blend of big atmospheric sound that is something a kin to the lush instrumentation of Explosions in the Sky and the echo reverb of say a Band of Horses or My Morning Jacket. The songs are really laid back but have great drums that push the songs along. What really tops it off Cherry style is the leadsingers voice. It melts on the tracks. It too has a bit of the echo thing going on but not enough to be compared with the two bands mentioned above. All in all these guys are doing there thing and I can't wait for the album. You can check them out Here. Some of their songs are free to download as well. As always let me know what you think.

Peace & Respect, -Bmar

Decent enough. I don't like their sound but I can see why some would.
