I was lucky to see Kevin Montgomery and his band at The Star & Garter in Manchester on the 18/01/07. During the day the UK was hit by its worst storm for 17 years. 11 people dies, trees were uprooted, roads closed. For a few hours it was traffic chaos. Somehow the band managed to travel from Lincolnshire to Manchester coming right across the country and the Pennines. I rang the venue a couple of times anxious that they might not make, but make they did and then some. The band was awesome, electrifying. This was the penultimate gig of the UK tour and even with the sparse crowed the band sounded fresh and tight. Two of Kevin's band supported, Danny White of Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers fame and Shawn Byrne. They played an enthusiastic interesting set playing a mixture of each others songs warming us up for the main act. Apart from Danny and Shawn Kevin’s band has the legendary Al Perkins who at 63 has played in some of the most seminal country rock bands ever. Al is still rocking and was totally on fire at the Star. At one point during Viva Las Vegas Al stood on a monitor stack and ripped into his guitar – fantastic. The drummer on this tour was Paul Griffith, somebody I had not come across before, but he smiled and laughed all the way through the set keeping rhythm with the base and playing rockabilly style when required. The set was a mixture of Kevin’s own songs, a song his Dad, Bob, wrote for Patsy Cline, Back in Baby’s Arms and other songs from different eras played in the Kevin Montgomery Style. My friends and I had a truly enjoyable night and would encourage anybody who likes live music to check Kevin out when he plays in their town.
If you like Hugh Mundell check out Lacksley Castell. Lacksley released an Album with Hugh in the early 80's called Jah Fire. He released two albums of his own with Sly & Robbie rythmn, Morning Glory and Princess Lady. All three are very good, but Morning Glory is absolute killer. The tracks Leaving and Righteous Man are essential 80's reggae.
Lacksley passed away in 1983.
