When Life Gives You Lemons......

You Paint That Shit Gold!

How wonderful of an album title is that seriously?! I think it's genius!

Anywho so I'm not a huge rap fan but I always appreciate good underground rap and Atmosphere is it! They are a Minnesota hip-hop group, currently consisting of rapper Slug (Sean Daley), producer ANT (Anthony Davis), and Touring DJ Mr. Dibbs (Brad Forste).

I picked up the album today, which came out this tuesday and from first listen, I'm hooked. The album is thus far proving to be just as genius as it's title. I'm pretty sure though, I would have been a lot more surprised if it was bad because everything these guys have put out I've enjoyed.

My Guilty Pleasure

Looking back I can't believe I've been a part of MOG for almost a year and I've Never Ever written about my guiltiest pleasure...The Nadas.

Hailing from Des Moines, Iowa the Nadas are a band that have been together for almost 15 years. The lineup has slightly changed over those years but it's two key members both songwriters who share vocal and guitar duties, Jason Walsmith and Mike Butterworth have always been there. Mike a little more Rock 'n Roll and Jason adding an alt-country tinge.

I suppose I may not have mentioned them because as I've stated they are my guilty pleasure. By simply listening to them, it may not make sense other than the fact that they are very accessible almost the point of being your cliche Folk-Rock band. But through their years they've been consistently known as a "college rock" band, playing in smaller music venues across the country and their popularity almost solely due to word of mouth. Many of their fans being frat boys and sorority girls, the kind of people most hipsters steer clear of.

I'm writing about them today because last night I saw them put on another fantastic show down at the FineLine here in town supporting their brand new album "Ghosts Inside These Halls", their 6th studio album. The band has a great stage presence, full of energy and most importantly actually enjoying what they do. They're the kind of guys who you to sit down and have a beer with, very down to earth and it comes through in their music. I've actually been lucky enough to interview them, sit in on in-studio record, and hang out with them on occasion, so I can attest that their down to earth-ness is genuine and not just an act. I've seen them so many times live I've lost count and never seen a bad show. Most importantly each of their shows remind me a little piece of Iowa regardless of where it is. It seems as though in every city that they play any person who resided in Iowa during their college years in that area come out of the woodwork and make up the majority of the crowd. It doesn't matter whether the show be here in nearby Minneapolis or all the way down in Phoenix.

Calling ALL MOGers!!!A MOGtastic Challenge!!

So I have a friend who is fairly new to the "indie" rock scene, having listened to the genre for the last 5 years but really not delving into it until very recently. Well Saturday while we were out catching a most excellent show (more on that in the next post) he proposed a challenge for me, asking me to come up with a list of 15 to 20 must have indie rock CDs all being from different artists that really define the history of the genre but that are also a little bit more on the obscure side, ones that people truly "in the know" treasure.
So I've been thinking about this for the last two days and I have quite honestly come up with a list about 2 pages long, which is really great and all but I've got to get it narrowed down and who knows maybe I've forgotten some?! This is probably the greatest challenge anyone has given me, so I'm pretty psyched about it, I LOVE opening minds to new music!!! So, lovely people of the MOG-O-Sphere my challenge to you is what are your top 10 to 20 indie rock CDs that define the history of the genre?

Here is one of my personal all time favs:

Musicovery

So I found about this pretty sweet site called Muiscovery you can go to it at http://musicovery.com/ there you can choose songs based on genre, decade, whether it's a hit, not a hit or my favorite discovery mode where it plays songs by somewhat more obscure artists, you also chose how fast a song is whether it's calm or energetic and dark or positive it's a least worth checking out, I still like pandora a lot better. I've found that most of even their discovery artists aren't all that new and discoverable for me and they don't seem to have a huge library, somewhere around 65,000 tracks which really when you think about it, isn't that many when you're spanning between the decades of 1950 and 2008

But check it out play around with it, see what you think

Study Shows Most Paid Nothing For Radiohead
2007-11-07 11:56:46.900,
Story by: Kevin Kampwirth

Since the announcement that they'd allow fans to pay what they please for a digital copy of their most recent record, In Rainbows, Radiohead has remained decidedly mum in regards to its sales. Well, the story has taken a surprising-but-not-really turn with an announcement from comScore Inc., a consumer research firm that monitors computer users' online behavior, which claims that 62 percent of individuals who downloaded the album from October 1 to October 29 paid zero dollars for it, while the remaining 38 percent dished out an average of six dollars. The figures in the study were put together by data gleaned from several hundred people who are part of comScore's database of two million computer users worldwide.

Figures show that 1.2 million people visited the site that was set up to handle orders for the digital download, although it could not confirm how many of those people actually purchased it. Furthermore, comScore shows that 40 percent of US residents who got the album paid an average of about eight dollars to do so, while only 36 percent of people outside the US dished out an average of $4.64 for it. Radiohead recently inked a deal with XL for European distribution of the LP and are still fielding offers from US imprints.

The Best/Worst Kind of Syndrome

Introducing The Deadly Syndrome. Four guys from L.A. that I just happened to catch while listening to Woxy. They imediately caught my ear and I had to hear more and love everything I've heard from them thus far. The song I heard on Woxy was actually Eucalyptus which I can't seem to find an mp3 of or a video of (if someone does you'll be my hero forever) but it is on their myspace page http://www.myspace.com/thedeadlysyndrome
as well as other great tunes (Creature, Creature is probably my second fav song). They are on Dim Mak Records so I shouldn't be surprised by my instant liking of them but still!

This is NOT the opposite of Hallelujah, this is Hallelujah!

I cannot seem to say this enough, I am in love with this town and I had another great experience last night. I decided to break my Minneapolis show cherry by seeing Jens Lekman and Dave Fischoff at the Triple Rock Social Club, such a great way to do so.

Going into the show I knew that Jens Lekman was amazing and had heard from others that he was even better live, so I had high expectations. As far as Dave Fischoff, hadn't really heard of him till I went to his Myspace to check him out http://www.myspace.com/davefischoff, not too bad and he is on Secretly Canadian which always seems to put out great music.

So I got to the venue right at 9, it was supposed to be doors at 8 show at 9 but some emo-rocker kiddie early show went over so I proceeded to wait in line for over an hour and a half luckily it was not cold out and I made some new friends.

Got in and Dave started right away and from the very beginning I could tell he was going to be good. His voice was so melodic and the harmonies were so tight between him and his back-up singers, it was lovely. I highly recommend checking him out, he has one album out thus far "The Crawl" which came out about a year ago.

Dave Fischoff - Small Drifts

Then on came Jens Lekman and as you all know from previous posts I am a sucker for the Swedish and he is by far no exception. He has this charm about him that just instantly makes you like him, he seems very real and down-to-earth as well as very funny. His songs are for the most part light hearted and fun, full of hand claps and finger snaps, which makes for a great actively engaged audience which the Triple Rock definitely was. I think the greatest point for me was that in one particular song he gets very quiet, almost to the point of silence and when this happened, it was dead silent in the club, it was amazing, no one was talking or having side-bar convos, everyone was engrossed in him and what he was doing.

Another great Minneapolis experience!

The Arcade Fire Never Seem To Disappoint Me

The Arcade Fire have finally released a video of a song from their latest release "Neon Bible". The video is actually of the title track and you can find it on Beonlineb.com. The first time I watched it I didn't get what made it so special but then once I went to youtube to find it to post someone commented on how it was interactive! What a great concept! So go to the site watch the video but while you're watching, click on things, click his hands, his face, all the props, and you can drag them around, it's great! I love how the Arcade Fire are not only amazingly talented musicians who blow me away with their music but they're also incredibly innovative and have unique ways of presenting their art. You get to, in a sense create your own music video with the help of Win, you only get out of it what you help put in by clicking!

Also while I was first searching for the video I came across a great video of The Arcade Fire singing "Noen Bible" in an elevator, I know this is nothing new and has been done many of times before not with so many people, (the creative use of a magazine was great too!) and hey why not share it!

but defnitely go check out that website!

so we walked across that grain belt bridge. into bright new minneapolis

I have big, exciting news, I've actually known this news since last Friday but I've been way to busy to MOG about it. Next friday, as in 6 days from now I will officially a be Minnesotan. I accepted a job up there and start on Monday the 15th, ending my 2 year stint as a Chicagoan. It all happened super fast but it seems as much as I love Chicago, the city itself, it just doesn't love me the same way. It's far to large of a city and seems to have almost gobbled me up and I am making my escape to what seems like a nice mix of big city "Chicagoish" life and Iowa small town hospitality.
I'm really excited for this move, over the past week I've been selling off all of my stuff and just moving up there with what I can fit in my little Civic and I can honestly say it's very liberating, a fresh new start, in an incredible city! While I'll miss Chicago a lot, Minneapolis here I come!

Now for a video by my favorite, now fellow Minnesotan

Even more music from across the pond - Lightspeed Champion

Intorducing Lightspeed Champion the new alias of Devonte 'Dev' Hynes, formerly of defunct Test-Icicles. I have been listening to him for a month or so now and really enjoy him. Completely different turn from what he did with the Test-Icicles, much more mellow but still just as catchy and dancable. Yet another jem from Domino Records.

"Midnight Surprise"

And for even more Swedish Pop!

This guy, Pelle Carlberg is on the same record label - TwentySeven Records, as the Acid House Kings who I just Mogged about. He as well is a great Swedish find. I love it when you find record labels who put out what seems to be al really great quality music, I think I've just added another to my list.

This first song is off of his latest album "In A Nutshell" while "Riverbank" and Go To Hell Miss Rydell" are off "Everything Now" which was released in 2006

"I Love You, You Imbecile"

Speaking of old school/new school pop......

These guys aren't brit pop, but Swedish pop, which may be even better! I've been keen to them a few years now and completely adore them, their music is super sweet and catchy pop which is most definitely my weakness.

They haven't had anything new out since 2005 but I've heard word of a new album sometime in the near future... I can't wait.

"Say Yes if You Love Me"

"This Heart is a Stone" - off of their Sing Along With the Acid House Kings album

We're Just Ordinary People You and Me

So I sell TV's for a living, that and anything and everything else that Sony makes. I've worked in retail electronics for over 5 years now tuning out blasting televisions or anything loud and obnoxious should pretty much be one of my top qualifications. We run a combo of HDNet and DiscoveryHD 24/7 and while many subject matters that cross the TV are both interesting and intriguing few actually stop me in my tracks and put me on the verge of goose bumps. Today, Dave Grohl joins that list of very select few.

It was a slow Sunday, full of lookers and random wanderers, which is odd in itself. About half-way through the day my ears sense a familiar sound...good music...which can sometimes be a very rare occurance in Sony Style and was pleasently surprised to find Dave Grohl on the screen, he is a fine piece of man on his own but becomes a deadly weapon when combine with such an amazing voice and talent. I caught myself being completely mesmerized by him and his on-stage charm even through the TV screen. Now I must see him live

I have no idea what concert they had on but this is "Best Of You" Live at VHQ (I just found it on YouTube)

Lolla Recap (Finally!)

So I realize it's been almost 2 weeks since Lollapalooza 07 took place but life as always has been crazy in the best way possible and I finally got around to uploading all my lovely photos and video of the weekend. It was hot, sticky, wet but completely amazing. Having never been to such a festival this was a great start of many more to come, festivals are the perfect place for a person with ADD (which I don't really have but seriously if you know me well..., I of course out did myself running from one stage to the next to the next (it was a 15 min trek from the north large stage to the south large stage) seeing everything possible but it was great! I met some absolutely wonderful people and even more incredible bands!

Highlights from the weekend (in no particular order):
- LCD Soundsystem
- The Hold Steady
- !!! (Chk Chk Chk)
- The Polyphonic Spree
- Iggy and the Stooges
- The Kidzapalooza stage in general (seeing Jim James, Patti Smith and Ben Harper all do acoustic (Jim on acoustic Banjo) up close and personal was a great surprise treat!) As well as seeing the Blisters, which is a band with 2 of the 4 members being Jeff Tweedy of Wilco's kids (and he was standing litterally RIGHT next to me!!)

Videos I took of the weekend:

Jim James of My Morning Jacket Singing "The Chipmunk Song" on the Kidzapalooza Stage on Saturday

The Blisters covering the Flaming Lips "She Don't Use Jelly" on the Kidzapalooza stage on Saturday

So I had never heard of Beatle Bob until this weekend, he brought on the Polyphonic Spree and then I saw him bust out some sweet moves at Roky Ericson on Saturday and it made me laugh so much I had to record it, aparently he's quite the groupie and has been around forever!

My Morning Jacket Performing "Gideon" with The Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra on Sunday afternood, the beginning is pretty rough, because I couldn't see AT ALL because I'm freaking short and everyone in front of me was tall but good audio none the less

Ben Harper performing "With My Own Two Hands" on the Kidzapalooza stage on Sunday

and now for the pics:
Here is a link to my webshots where I've got some really amazing photos, I managed to get pretty close to the stage for the majority of the shows I saw, always sneaking in through the sides of the stage. Pretty sweet! http://entertainment.webshots.com/album/560266302wsTiLN?vhost=entertainment

Overall it was incredible weekend I can't believe how many incredibly talented bands I saw just in one weekend. Overall I went in knowing a good 95% of the bands playing so it wasn't a weekend of discovery but more a weekend of greater appreciation for the bands I loved but had never gotten the chance to see live! The best quote of the weekend goes to James Murphy (who could seriously be an identical twin of my friend David) when informing the audience that “if you don’t see any girls around you, you’re dancing wrong.” (he also goes on to casually note the coincidence of playing his hit song "Daft Punk is Playing at my House" while Daft Punk is indeed getting ready to play on the stage right across the softball fields) and the biggest rockstar moment goes to Iggy Pop when he invited the audience on stage for "No Fun" half way through his set and then had trouble getting them to leave afterwards (there are definitely photos of that mayhem!)

Next up: CMJ Music Marathon in NYC in October!!! Yeah!!!!!!

So I'm looking for some good music suggestions. I'm going on a 5-hour road trip back to Iowa for a wedding this weekend. Upbeat, catchy, dance-in-your car type stuff and not like typical older songs like Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run, although very good I'm looking more for new stuff I possibly haven't heard, it's all about music discovery!

So to me Interpol is one of the greatest bands out there right now, but have you seen their new video for the Heinrich Maneuver? (If not you can watch it below, how nice!) I love the song but I've watched it a few times and just haven't gotten much of anything out of it.
BAM

I love festivals! And it's a good thing too cause Chicago is chuck full of them, you can find one litterally every weekend! Unfortunately I work pretty much every weekend! However yesterday I got to catch the end of BAM - the Belmont Arts and Music Festival, all weekend long they had a great list of musicians playing, from the Redwalls, to Robbers on High Street to Bob Mould, unfortuantely I didn't get to catch any of them but I did end up catching the last two acts of the festival, the Wrens and the Omega Moos (members of Umphree's McGee and New Deal) - very jambandish/stoner kind of stuff, it was a great time, great atmosphere, great people and for only $5! Now if only I had every weekend off to catch all the festival goodness! Cause next week is the infamous "Taste" the one and only Taste of Chicago!

Icky Thump USB Flash Drive

For fans of Jack and Meg, it's probably a long-standing dream of yours to purchase the Icky Thump album on limited edition thumb drives complete with cartoon renditions of the rockers, but even if it that understandably bizarre scenario never actually crossed your mind, you can still make it a reality. Apparently, the White Stripes are offering up their latest album on two fairly rare USB drives, each sporting 512MB of internal space, an artistic rendition of one of the band mates, and thirteen rockin' tracks in Apple Lossless format. Only 3,333 of each will be created, and while just one will run you a whopping $57.50, you may as well grab the duo for a discounted $99. Of course, we're still not entirely certain if these things are actually licensed by the band, but it's safe to assume that a seven nation army of fans will have these bought up before the legal teams can even get their case together.

If you want one check out http://whitestripes.kungfunation.com/index.php?main_page=product_music_info&products_id=45

Found on Engadget Pretty crazy

Of other White Stripes news: So Elektra, the Mid-day DJ for Chicago's "alternative" (I say that in quotes because they can be questionably mainstream most of the time.) got a leaked copy of The White Stripes album and played it in its entirety on her shifts a few days ago. Well apparently Jack White got word of this all the way in Spain shortly after and completely bitched her out for doing playing it. Her comeback was that if they are supposed to be this cutting edge radio station that plays everything before most people hear it, it is now becoming almost impossible for them to be the first when the internet is chuck full of leaked albums. Their listenership is down and about 90% of it is due to the internet. I can see her point completely and I think it took a lot of guts for her to do it (I don't think I would for fear of losing my job), but I definitely give her props.

Also if anyone was wondering/or cares I haven't been MOGing or doing much music related as of late because 2 weeks ago I go into a car accident, nothing too horrible, I'm okay ut it really put my life into prespective and I can't speak much on it now but I'm sure I will at a later time but I just have a lot going on, but I will be back! I'm poor now because of the accident so that's why I'm here MOGing on a Friday night instead of being at the Taste Of Randolph Street watching Fountains of Wayne, The Walkmen and Stephen Kellogg on this lovely Friday evening in the city! I did however walk to the lake today, went for a swim, read some magazines and enjoyed the weather!

...And they finally get the recognition they deserve

Found on CMJ.com

Marshalltown, Iowa hardcore five-piece Modern Life Is War have completed work on Midnight In America, their impending follow-up to 2005's blistering Witness (Deathwish). The new album, which hits shelves August 21, will be the group's first for new home Equal Vision and features production from veteran punk, indie studio god and former Jawbox member J. Robbins (Against Me!, Texas Is The Reason). According to frontman Jeff Eaton, the new album's "crush" mentality paints American as "a dead wonderland," with themes of Hollywood, race, technology, and pop culture present in its lyrics.

"If the post World War II generation felt a sense of rebellion and emptiness, that same feeling is tenfold for us," says Eaton. "We have never been a political band and still aren't. [Actress] Jean Seberg was my muse for the record and she will grace the cover, her life speaks volumes on the title of the record. There's a feeling you get here late at night that I don't get anywhere else in the world."

Proving that they still remain one of the hardest working bands in the genre, the boys from Iowa will support their new album by blaring across the country and back with an insane 43-date itinerary. Joining them for the whole ride are Southern outfits He Is Legend and Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster while Paulson and House Of Fools will split the tour's opening slot. Fans can grab their first taste of Midnight at the shows as the band will be bringing along two-track sampler CDs for distribution to the masses.

Love them! Even when they're stripped down to just the bare minimum their greatness shines through!
