I sprang for good seats at Berkeley's Greek Theater for John Mellencamp and Lucinda Williams last weekend. A long, loud, and thoroughly satisfying effort. Mellencamp's band is razor sharp, and he was in end-of-tour happy mood. Lucinda Williams opened, and was good, but Mellencamp was spectacular, and I am not easily impressed.

I guess you could say I respect Mellencamp more than I love him, but his new record is produced by T Bone Burnett and sounds very, very good on DVD and a home theater. T Bone, aside from his own projects and Sam Phillips (who I confused with Aimee Mann), has produced Brother Where Are You soundtrack and the Plant Kruase duet Raising Sand. He has excellent taste and impeccable studio chops. This record uses a technology T Bone calls "Code" and may be downloaded from the DVD. It is the antithesis of MP-3, overly compressed or high volume level CD's. I don't think this is a gimmick but possibly a break-through. The record is definitely worth checking out.

I don't have much information on this but the business media has reported that Amazon is announcing a service to copy out of print CD's, apparently in MP-3 format. No info on price, but they have a pretty deep catalogue. I remember looking for months for a used copy of Bowie's soundtrack, The Budda of Surburbia. Anyway, for what it's worth... BerkeleyBob

Geez, that sounds illegal.
It may be illegal but its a damned good idea... when you take the interests of the fans into consideration.
i'm with Frost. i bet Amazon could obtain the publishing license to make mp3s available. just coz the CD is out of print, doesn't mean it can never be "reprinted" in the future. i think someone just has to buy the rights to do so.
