THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

I'm probably going straight to hell for this...

...but I have to admit that I have always been one of those folks who think that the Grateful Dead and Phish are both equally blase.I can't think of any of their songs that you could whistle if you were doing something that might elicit the joys of whistling or even humming for that matter.(Of course, there are a few other artists in that category as well) Maybe it's because I never had much fun with drugs - not that I didn't try them, most were not as much fun as my normal joy of being alive and acutely aware.Yeah, granted, both bands could jam for hours - but then so could the musicians who used to hang out at the Last Exit cafe in Seattle's U District, at someone's home on non open mic nights. I don't find their lyrics mind-bending or enlightening in any way unique. I will give credit to Jerry Garcia for being able to make certain all the lines rhymed, and to Trey for being able to write a college thesis and figure out how to make money off of it for years, but I still can't remember any of the songs it inspired or their tunes.Like I said, in many folks opinions, I am going to hell.... but at least I am happy!

  4. contrabandwidth says As a former Phish/Dead head, let me say, I take no offense. It comes with the territory. Even though you kind of base your argument on some pretty stereotypical thinking. I probably only did drugs a couple of the 35 times I saw the band (Phish), and actually enjoyed seeing them while I was sober. You like it or you don't, and I certainly don't need to be evangelical about either band - they have enough people talking themselves in circles doing that. It was fun while it lasted, but I'll always love to hear what else is out there.

  5. BecauseYouAreHere says LOL ! Thanks for the comments folks. Maybe I should have added into the diatribe that I lived with/dated a Phish/Dead head for 4 years, as well as hung out with more die-hards. I still didn't get it, not for a lack of trying and even attending a few concerts.... oh well. Like you said contrabandwidth, you either like it or you don't - it's been known to be the same for people's opinions of clowns! ;)

  6. dermahrk says I also had a Deadhead for a roommate. Hasn't spoken to me for the last 28 years, after I told him I voted for Reagan. No great loss. And no great music either.
