back on the beat

I know I have been negligent about posting what we’re playing recently, I hope this will be helpful. More diligence will follow, just been making more mojitos and martinis than CD mixes of late. The evenings around here have been dominated by just a few great CD’s recently, so if you are here to see what it was you heard while you where here, and it was after, say 8:30- just check in on these discs. Ozomatli ~ Don’t Mess With the DragonI went to see Ozomatli in Atlanta in 1998 or 1999, they entered already playing their instruments from the front of the hall and moved through the crowd to the stage. If you get an opportunity to see Ozo live, trust me, you will be impressed. Ethnically diverse and openly political, Ozomatli have on several occasions played for picket lines and protesters. Don’t Mess with the Dragon is the bands fifth full length offering. I would also highly recommend the debut, Ozomatli. Balkan Beatbox ~ self titled A New York band fusing Jewish, Mediterranean and Balkan influences to create a first class party disc, I still keep hearing things in this disc every time I listen to it. I still can't believe I missed this when it first was released, whatever. Reminds me a little of Manu Chao in the way it hijack styles and weave traditional with modern. A must have for your next party. They are on tour currently in support of the latest release Nu-Med, which sounds good, I don’t have it yet, however--you heard the debut here. From the crew that brought you Gogol Bordello.Ursula 1000 UrsadelicaUrsula 1000 is ubercool DJ Alex Jemino hooking up the loungecore scene with non-stop cheese and fun. Essentially everything on the ESL label is perfect music for style conscious drunks. Check out the Thievery Corporation stuff if you like the downtempo that we play earlier in the dining room. Ursula1000 has several releases, all of which we tend to play around happy hour. There’s nothing more than full tilt happy happy joy joy here, but in this world, music like this is a welcome release. Kudos to Bob for sharing with Calgary.Later this weekend: The amazing new Andy Palacio disc, Watina.
