RE: everything OK?

Ivylander dropped me note today, just to check in and see if I was okay (he's a good guy like that). So I figured I should post my reply to the ol' MOS , 'cause I've been neglectin' my fellow moggers (except the ones I see all the time). here goes:

Things have been really hectic lately. I took a cooking job about 2 months ago, working with two close friends. Both of the guys are musicians and their bands (Glossary and How I Became the Bomb) are starting gain some serious momentum. As a result, I've been working some crazy hours, on top of working at the record store, trying to kick start a label, blog, and maintain my DJ career (which is hasn't been working very well - who would have guessed that Nashville doesn't really dig afro-beat and boogaloo...?).

Life around here has actually been really frickin good, now that I think about it. Thanks for asking. I've been too busy to appreciate what's going on here in M'boro.

Since my student loans came due, I've been kinda freaked out by music. I owe an assload-o-student loans 'cause I wanted to learn how to make hit-records happen (a Bachelor of Science in Music Business Management...yep, it sure is BS...), even though I haven't listened to mainstream/pop music since I got my short n' curlies...but then, the bands I thought were boring 8/10 years ago are breaking the Top 5 (Modest Mouse, Shins yadda yadda yadda). Needless, to say it's been a bit of an identity crisis for an aging indie rocker - am I way ahead of the learning curve or way behind? Fucked if I know...

It's also been the worst year in the modern era for selling recorded music, so it's been tough to find a job in my field. I've made some very harsh - and very public - comments about the RIAA and the way the major labels are handling things, which might not be helping my situation either. (google's a muthafucker...) Fortunately, my spider-sense is tingling and I feel like (at least a protion of) the industry will be moving towards a model more empathetic to consumers and artists than the current one - an entire industry can only keep it's collective head up it's collective ass for so long...

Basically, I'm living the rock n roll fantasy...I can't really complain.

How have you been?

Vashti Bunyan Is Coming To Nashville!!!

A repost from our pals over at Grimey's:

Hey y'all,

Just wanna make sure everyone is hip to some fun stuff going on next week.....

In 1969, Vashti Bunyan, with the help of producer Joe Boyd (Nick Drake, Incredible String Band, Toots and the Maytals) recorded Just Another Diamond Day, which is now considered to be one of the top 100 British Albums of all time. She then walked away from the music business and, for the next thirty-years, disappeared into the Scottish country-side to raise her family.

Now thanks to the encouragement from fans like David Byrne, Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Animal Collective, and Fourtet, Vashti is bringing her sublime music to a handful of lucky cities.

Vashti and her backing band and co-headliner Vetiver (Andy Cabic, Otto Hauser of Devendra Banhart’s band) whose record To Find Me Gone inhabited the highest regions of many year-end list get you grooving with the kind of smoky, white soul rivaling JJ Cale.

Vashti Bunyan and Vetiver play The Mercy Lounge on Wednesday, February 7.

For a chance to win a pair of tickets and a limited-edition, hand-made concert poster made by Nashville’s very own Isle of Printing and signed by Vashti and Vetiver. Come around Grimey’s and drop your name in a hat or something that suffices for the mystery and suspense that a hat provides. We'll be selecting a winner next Tuesday!

xoxo,

HOLY HECK! The new Grand Palace Records website is up!

If anybody's been wondering where I've been lately (which you probably weren't), I've test-driving Grand Palace's new website/blog - which, by the way, is totally rad. It's kinda like driving a monster truck that was built from 1972 Cadillac Eldorado, but with internet-type-stuff. Anyway, if you wanna check it out:

Grand Palace Website

Tell me what you think!

p.s. the site was designed by the super-rad Micheal Eades.

A biker comes upon a girl with a flat tire and offers her a ride home. He winds up at a drug party with the girl's sister, then follows her to a turkey farm owned by her father, a mad scientist. The father turns the biker into a giant turkey monster who goes after drug dealers.

Henry finished his MOG jingle today and brought it up to the record store so I could upload it (and so he didn't have to walk to campus). So here it is - enjoy!

MOG in the Nashville Scene

The MOG party on Saturday got a nice write up in the Nashville Scene's gossip column, so I figured I'd share it with all of you:

The Spin:Blogorrific

The Basement played host to Nashville’s first Mog.com party Saturday night, a relatively new social networking website for music bloggers. Though the numbers are still small, Mog’s members know a good band when they hear one—Chicago rock ’n’ soulers Catfish Haven headlined the gig. Murfreesboro openers SJ and the Props—comprised of members of several past and present ’Boro bands such as The Katies, Mercator and Turncoats—had three extra backup singers, and despite the tight squeeze on stage, they still managed to work the crowd. One audience member quipped, “This guy totally got his moves from Toby Keith.” While the hand gestures, swagger and the cowboy hat certainly bore some resemblance, thankfully the songwriting cues didn’t. Up next were Turncoats, who delivered a tight set of classic power-pop (that also blazed through punk territory with a searing take on Wire’s “Ex-Lion Tamer”) to a crowd that by then had swelled to shoulder-to-shoulder status. DJ Bawston Sean cemented the Murfreesboro takeover spinning soul records between sets. Then came Catfish Haven, who have always been the sort of band that live and die by their live shows and, due to a recent increase in resources, the trio were able to supplement their sound with two backup singers and a second guitarist, resulting in a rich, swinging sound. But the selling point for this band remains frontman George Hunter’s raspy howl and his vintage, no-nonsense lyrics. Despite the band’s narrow musical scope, Hunter’s vocal conviction helps them avoid classic-rock revisionism pitfalls—songs like “Tell Me” and “Another Late Night” are raucous barroom anthems that are just as at home at 1 a.m. in a dark club as they are on a hipper-than-thou indie-rock blog.

For the whole article, including the star-studded show down the street, click here

Catfish Haven, More Like Catfish HEAVEN! (sorry, bad joke)

(Ryan, the drummer for Catfish Haven, after the show.)

Well, Saturday night was a pretty great night to be rock n' reelin' in Nashville, TN. Besides the MOG show at the Basement, which was at capacity from about 10:30 (which is really early around here), there was another sell-out local show at the 1000-capacity Mercy Lounge down the road. There was also some mysterious dance party that packed 12th & Porter, so basically, we have verifiable proof of the much-rumored "Nashville Audience". I'd like to thank Catfish Haven, Turncoats, SJ & The Props, David, Kate and everyone at MOG , Grimey, Behran, the Double D Expierience (Dave & Dave) at The Basement and all the people that showed up. It was way rad.

More pictures and stuff in the comments.

I'm going to keep this short and sweet, 'cause I'm exhausted. Last night's MOG -sponosred show with Catfish Haven, Turnoats and SJ & The Props was WAAAY rad. It was a packed house at The Basement, the bands were better than I've ever seen them and the bartender was REALLY happy at the end of the night. All in all, a stunning success. I'll post some pictures and give you the full run down soon, but for now I'm gonna listen to the Kinks and play Tetris.

So I showed up at the bar last night and there were a bunch of Moggers hangin' out. So I took some pictures:

Tigers Con Queso, the rock n roll machine run by our very own Casio Casanova and SteveCrossRock

Plus, Henry vandalized some vandalism on behalf of the Grand Palace crew

I Heart Dusty Groove...A Latin-Psyche-Soul Freakout

So I went a little nuts with the Latin-Soul at Dustygroove.com...I'll admit that. But seriously folks, how can you resist the potent combo of afro-latin percussion and R&B rythms? Do you want to boogaloo? Do you want to shingaling? I'm pretty sure you do.

Here's what I picked up...

Ray Barreto - Acid
The Bennito Sextet - Plus One
Cymande - Promised Heights
Orchestra Harlow - El Exigente
Willie Bobo And The Bo-Gents - Do What You Want To Do
The Latin Blues Band Featuring Luis Avilles - Take A Trip Pussycat
Dennis Coffey - Hair and Thangs

plus the awesome "Brutatlity Garden" book about Brazil's Tropicalia art movement...

Discuss amongst yourselves...

Nashville Underground: Hot List 2006

In no particular order, I give you my picks for the best records in made in Music City (and the vicinity) this year. Bear in mind that, according to mypace, there are almost 10,000 bands within 50 miles of Downtown Nashville. if I missed your favorite...so here goes:

How I Became The Bomb - Their debut EP Let's Go full of killer pop tunes about robots and secret agents. Their live show is fantastic (see photo above) and they will be unstoppable in '07 - mark my words.

The Carter Administration - These guys released their 9th recording of clever, melodic guitar rock this year.God & Country reminds me of a time when "indie rock" wasn't synonomous with "soft rock bullshit". Look for their new full-length on Theory 8 records next year.

Apollo Up - Chariots of Fire is somewhere between Elvis Costello and The Mintuemen, and you can NOT f*ck with it. Not for a second.

Glossary - Murfreesboro's stalwart rockers dropped their fourth record, For What I Don't, which has finally garnered them the attention and praise they deserve. (And from Patterson "Drive-By Truckers" hood, no less!)

Hands Down Eugene - When Gram Parsons talked about "Cosmic American Music", he was talking about HDE 's album Madison . Too good for words.

JEFF - I vote for Jake and Jamin Orral as the "musicians most ikely to change the world." The spazzy, stoner-punk of this year's Castle Storm was mind-blowing, but not nearly as epicly earth-shaking as their new band Skyblazer. These kids have skill and taste WAY beyond most of the folks in the city. Watch out.

The Features - The Contrast Ep is their first EP after getting dropped from Universal. Only a major label could fuck up with a pop band this good. If you're in Chicago for New Years, try to catch them opening for the Raconteurs.

What Singles Came Out This Year?

Again, I've been asked to participate in a year-end critics poll and I can't think of any answers. This time I have to figure out the top ten singles of the year, but frankly I can't think of anything that was released as a "single"...

Help me out moggers, what were the best singles of the year?

Top 6 You Probably Missed In 2006

Here's my list of the hip-sh!t that most folks slept on this year. I tried to provide links to other moggers veiws on my hit list, so make sure to follow links and say hello.

1. Catfish Haven - Tell Me LP (Secretly Canadian)
These guys have had a hell of year. They released two CDs, toured all of the U.S. and U.K., and the found themselves on the cover of CMJ :New Music Monthly. I saw them play four times this year, and each performance was better than the one before. Expect HUGE things from these guys in the year to come. Check out their video above.

2. Alice Smith - For Lovers Dreamers and Me (BBE)
Smooth but tough soul in the neither-neo-nor-retro category. Hipster soul-pop - psychedelic-era Carol King meets Sade - that sorta thing. Last month, Coolfer.com reported some major label interest and I would be surprised if we see a very popular big-label record from her by spring 08.

3. Susan Christie - Painted Lady (Finders Keepers)
Recorded in 1969, released in 2006, this folk-funk masterwork didn't see the light of for 37 frickin' years. It makes you wonder...

4. Pearls & Brass - The Indian Tower (Drag City)
This trio is heavy in the Ten Years After/Mountain/Spooky Tooth sesnse of the word. "Bad Ass Guitar Rock" is probably the best description. You wish your band was this good.

5. Earl Greyhound - Soft Targets (Some)
Heavy-Glam-meets-Power-Pop multiplied by power-trio plus boy-girl-vocals equals rad.

6. Howling Rain - Howlin Rain (Birdman)
Halfway between the Faces and mid-period Dinasour Jr. Serious BBQing music. Nuff Said.

Now tell me what's your fave underground hit from the passed year?

Have a Hippy Holiday Mix

So, this is the first year that I'm not working at a mall during Christmas in 6 years. Not surprisingly, I'm in to the whole holiday-spirit thing at the moment. I have had a hell of a good year and I'm in a pretty damn good mood today, so I have made you, my mog-buddies, a mix. It doesn't have any Christmas music on it, just some of my favorite tracks from the passed year, including such super-power hits as:

Re-Entry to Mog - 101 Strings Orchestra

Echo In Your Mind - Susan Christie

King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown - Augustus Pablo

Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan

Some Velvet Morning - Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood

Ave, Lucifer (Hail, Lucifer) - Os Mutantes

Shiny Woman - The Mattoid

Eight Miles High - The Byrds

You're Nogood - Terry Riley

You can get the whole mix over on my multiply page ...which, I admit needs a little work. ENJOY !

Top Bunch of Stuff On the Internet in 2006

Mog has definitely dominated my interweb browsing in the last 5/6 months, so I figured I'd throw together a list of my other favorite music-related sutff of 2006.

1. Catfish Haven - Crazy For Leaving Mp3 By far, my favorite band of 2006. They put out two strikingly-soulful CDs this year, the EP Please Come Back and the full-length Tell Me. Both kick a lot of ass. I'm not sure if I could choose If I had to. Oh, and their live show is tight, as in T-I-G-H-T, tight.

2. Office Naps Like the site says, "Fresh 45 rpm curios every Monday". It's my weekly dose of weird records from the darkest depths of dollar-bin obsurity, thouroughly researched and tastefully compiled. This week they've got 60s Fillipino pop, last week was "desert songs", next week will probably be...awesome.

3. The Battle of the Bands The greastest cartoon-made-entriely-of-record-covers ever. Genius.

4. Aziz Ansari "People say, 'Clell, you've got blood on your hands.' Well, I've got gold records on my wall...and blood on my hands." The finest hipster humor on the internerd.

5. Waxidermy Basically, the album length equivalent of OfficeNaps - a constant stream of the strangest in recorded sound, made by and for really geeky record-geeks. It's geek-tacular, really.

6. Idolator I like mean, sarcastic music-industry blogs. They're entertaining.

7. Nashville Cream Nobody is covering the "Nashville-as-retirement-community-for-washed-up-rock-stars" phenomenon as well as the Cream. It's rad.

8. Cable and Tweed Atlanta's best music blog. I don't go to ATL very often (or ever, really), but I feel compelled to read this blog all the time - probably 'cause they have some of the best Nashville coverage around. Super-crazy hip.

9. The 45 rpm Generator If I learned anything this year, it would have to be that "makin' records is fun." Fun is fun.

10. The Record Store Cats

Honorable Mention: Gerard vs Bear 'cause it's funny...

JANUARY 13, 2007:Mog is gonna rock Music City (a.k.a. the announcement I meant to make yesterday)

Okay, so here it is folks:
On January 13, 2007 MOG .COM presents an evening of fan-frickin-tastic roll with Catfish Haven (Secretly Canadian Records),Turncoats( Grand Palace Records), and S.J. & The Props (Grand Palace Records) at The Basement in Nashville,TN.

Catfish Haven are one of the best live bands in America - plain and simple. Their music is straightforward rock n soul, their live show is energetic and they are some of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Turncoats sound like the Stones if they were actually from the South. And SJ? Well, SJ & The Props are kind of like the bastard sons of William Faulkner, Townes Van Zandt and Sister Rosetta Tharpe if Wayne Coyne were their babysitter. Plus The Basement is the best club in Nashville it's intimate, friendly and sounds AMAZING . Plus the drink are affordable and it's located beneath Grimey's, the best record store in Nashvegas.

Stay tuned for more details.

MOG ON !

Wow, I haven't mogged in almost two weeks...and damn, has it been a crazy two weeks. I've been running around like a madman trying to promote the release of the new "Turncoats:http://myspace.com/turncoatstn single, but it's all worked out really well. They recieved two write-ups from Nashville Scene, two from All The Rage, a feature in the Murfreesboro Post, and a blurb in the Tennessean, plus airplay on WMTS , WRVU and WRLT . They played a great release show at Grand Palace and did an instore at Grimey's (the best record store in Nash Vegas). I also organized a book-signing at Grimey's the same night, which was super fun. And the record store is in the new issue of Southeast Permformer magazine. I love it!

Plus, it's my anniversary tonight and I've got an interview for a marketing job on Monday! I LOVE LIFE !

Proud of My Boys

So, my "roommates band"http://www.myspace.com is releasing it's first record on Thursday, and I'm really proud of the guys. They've been working hard to get this shit together, and things are starting to happen for them. There was a great write-up in Nashville's weekly entertainment magazine All The Rage yesterday. It rules.

TURNCOATS SHOOT THAT GIRL /YOU BEEN GONE 45

9 p.m. Thu., Oct. 26, Grand Palace, 18+, $5.

With SJ & The Props.

When I recently asked Self leader and Beck bandmate Matt Mahaffey which local bands he was particularly keen on, he gave me one name: Turncoats.

Mahaffey has always kept a close ear on the Murfreesboro underground scene from which Turncoats sprang, ever since his days as the center of the Spongebath Records universe, so it's not surprising that a Boro band (a supergroup of sorts featuring members of the Young Livers, the Bang Up and The Katies) with a penchant for razor-sharp pop should be bleeping his radar. I'm also going on record to predict that as soon as Little Steven hears the band's fantastic debut single on local label Grand Palace, Turncoats should instantly have another equally vocal fan. He should lose his mind over this one.

The Turncoats' single, perfectly produced by Murfreesboro's Brian Carter, kicks some Kink-y British invasion garage rock with a hint of post-Strokes style and slippery Stones bar band blues, without any annoying indie incompetence and hipster disaffectedness.

Turncoats have to — and I'm insisting here, have to — play the upcoming Little Steven's Underground Garage event with the New York Dolls. I'll lead a one-man picket outside of City Hall if not.
-Jason Moon Wilkins

Promoting MOG on your Campus

I noticed that MOG is looking for college reps, and I thought I would offer upper a little friendly advice. I took my time getting my degree, so I've had A LOT of time to figure this out - seven to nine years, depending on how you do the math. Most of the advice is event/rock show-focused, but I'll try my best to share some all-purpose knowledge.

P.S. It's a large post, so I put it in the comments section...

Sibling-Style Psychic Link and the new Jarvis Cocker Tracks

oh, the internet. bringing families together. this e-mail exchange JUST happened:

Sean to Caitlin (my little sister):
have you heard the new Jarvis Cocker tracks?

Caitlin:
holy shit you just READ MY MIND ! I was about to e-mail you the same fucking thing! NOt like casually thinking about it but about to hit the compose button. That is creepy I've got chills. So so so good.

i really dug black magic. that's on the hype machine.
he's sampling crimson and clover right?

Sean:
magic is TOTALLY crimson & clover redux, which is rad, cause it's crimson and clovers. i really dig the other one too - classic cocker lyrics.

Caitlin:
i love jarvis. I was think about music and what I like and if I had to make up a genre that best sums up my tastes it would be odd-pop. pulp falls into the subcatagory of odd-dance-pop.

here's another song

Sean:
fat children is pretty fuckin' cool, too.

Caitlin:
I hope they figure out a US release date for that album or at least make it available on emusic or something. Just those two tracks are enough fo rme to want to buy it.

Sean:
definitely.

Thanks to everybody for their stange suggestions, I definitely discovered some crazy songs, but unfortunately I could only find about 2/3 of 'em. As for my first legal-downloading expierence, it was, uh, different. Maybe it gets better when you have a more expierience...ah well. (insert bad virginity joke here)

I'll post the track listing as a comment, 'cause I don't want to clog up the MOS ...

Okay, so my goal of spending a $100 itunes gift certificate on 100 super-strange songs by 100 different artists is looking, well, really strange. We've got twenty-eight so far, and they represent the whole spectrum of oddness, so dig deep for the craziest tunes in your collection - I NEED MORE WEIRD MUSIC IN MY LIFE !!! (My girl friend would argue otherwise, but that's another post all together...)

MOG PARTY WRAP UP!!!

Well, the dust has settled, I've taken a nap and eaten a good meal - now it's time to put this party to bed. We had a really good turnout, and from what I've been told, I was the only person that didn't have an awesome time - so I guess that means it was a success!!!

I'm sorry if I came across as a bit, er, cranky in my live mog, but, like Erykah Badu said, "I'm an artist, and I'm sensitive about my shit." I'm not really a fan of being on stage when I DJ , I'd rather be stashed in a corner at eye-level with people on the dancefloor - it's not a star-trip thing for me, and I don't do any neat tricks. I almost snapped when my 45 adaptor rolled off my table into the notorious "Wall Street Black Hole", a 2 inch gap between the wall and the stage that's about three inches deeper than I can reach. It was a full moon, there were some wacky vibes in the air, and I definitely vented on the mogosphere...

As for the venue, ah well, I know better than to deal with them again. Rumor has it that I was a pawn in some intra-office politickin', which I really don't appreciate. We run neighboring businesses, so it's kind of a bummer that they aren't cool but, hell, it doesn't really matter. Next time, I'm throwing a party it's gonna be at the Mexican restraunt down the street. I love those folks, they're wicked nice. And the 36oz Dos Equis only costs $3, which you can't beat with a stick.

All in all, it was a great time, really. I had a good solid week of hardcore promoting, which is one of my favorite things in the world to do. I also got to play a whole bunch of funky-ass records, which is my number-one, all-time favorite thing EVER . Now it's time to start working on Part 2:The Legend Continues...

Here's last night's set list, I'll have pictures up tommorrow.

How do you describe Mog?

I've been promoting this mog party and I've been trying to describe the Mog-phenom without sounding like a raging internerd, which is tough 'cause i AM a raging internerd. I always feel weird using terms like "social networking" and hate using myspace as a reference point, but those are the most obvious. So here's what I want from you guys - describe MOG in 20 words or less, no cursing, no tech-babble. It needs to be something I can blurt out when I'm three and half sheets to the wind, something snappy. Oh, and the rules are flexible for limericks and haikus.

Thanks!

SOUTHERN MOG PARTY 10/06/06 UPDATE

DJ D -Funk has bowed out of the party, unfortunately. He run's the best record store in Nashville, and they're having their HUGE semi-annual sale the next morning. I DJed at the last sale, and I can vouch for how hectic it can get. The dude is gonna need a good night's rest.

To make up for D-funk's absence, I went to his store and dropped a chunk of change on some funk-tacular new vinyl. And since I've got four hours to spin that means more funk, disco, soul, and side-long psychedelic freak-outs - basically, more freak-tastic fun than ever before...

Remember this party is free for moggers but YOU HAVE TO MOG -MAIL ME to get on the list. If your friends want to get in free THEY HAVE TO MOG -MAIL ME. I'll be DJing all night, so we need to make this as easy on the bouncers as possible (they can get a little cranky sometimes).

Here's the info again:

Friday, October 6, 2006
Mog.com presents The Protomen After Party
w/ DJ Bawston Sean
@ Wall Street, 121 N. Maple St.
Murfreesboro, TN 37130
10 p.m., 18+, Free for Moggers $5 for everyone else.

MOG , MOG, 'til the break of dawn, rockin MCs like I'm mowin' the lawn,
Bawston Sean

P.S. Etcvisitor will be helping out, so be on the look out - he'll be the one dancing on the ceiling, Billy Ocean-style.

So I went to see the Haven the other night. An awesome show to cap off an awesome day, but that's a whole 'nother post. So I get to the club and I see Miguel, the bass player. We greet each other and he says "Hey, this girl from california got in touch with us on Myspace. She said you told her about it, on..."

"Mog?"

"Ya, that's the one!"

So it ends up that Miguel has been communicating with our very Killa, which is super-cool. That's my first instance of mogworld and rockworld colliding.

SOUTHERN MOG PARTY - 10/06/06

Hey Everybody!!!

We're having the first Southern MOG party in Murfreesboro, TN on Friday, October 6. It's gonna be a Funk N Soul Dance Party with DJ D -Funk (WRVU, WRLT , Grimey's Records) and yours truly on the wheels of steel at Wall Street (on the square) - and MOGGERS GET IN FREE !!! (Normal, boring people have to pay 5 bucks). The drinks are cheap, beats are deep and there's not a chance that you'll stay in your seat - so we better see you there!

I know there are over 400 moggers within a few hours drive, so let me sweeten the deal for the folks on the fence. If you come out for the weekend, there's a free anniversary show at Grand Palace Records":http://www.myspace.com/grandpalace the following night. Catfish Haven, The Carter Adminstration and The Punk Rock Party Band are playing, plus Chris "The Alcohol Stuntman" Crofton will be doing comedy between sets. It's gonna be some goooooood rockin'.

Just send me a mog-mail, put on your dancin' shoes and get ready for some serious funkin' fun!!!

Mog Party - 10/06/06
Wall Street
121 North Maple,
Murfreesboro, TN
37130

UPDATE : D-Funk can't make it out that night, because the next day is Grimey's HUUUUUUUUGE blow-out sale. If you are coming from out of town, I'd say the sale is even more incentive than the party...which I shouldn't really say, but I cannot mog a lie - a Grimey's sale is always an awesomely good time.

For Lovers, Dreamers & Me

There's no auto-tuning on this record. No bullshit either. As far pop records go, you probably won't find a more soulful, folky and funky set of songs this year. Alice Smith has a classic voice, a voice like Aretha, Sade, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Etta James - distinct, rich and warm with a huge range and amazing control. Stylistically, Smith slides between genres, seemlessly schoomozing between sunny pop, moody 70s Motown, a little doo-wop and some serious Philly Soul - not to mention quite a bit of the Carol King back catalog.

For Lovers... has been nailed with the "neo-soul" and "throwback" tags, which is a bit unfair. For Lovers... is a thouroughly modern record with a keen sense of classic pop and soul - just because it's more Bacharach than Beyonce, doesn't mean it's any less contemporary. Craftsmanship isn't really high on the "must have" list for pop singers anymore, so the confusion might be understandable. (For more on this befuddling lapse of judgement by the record industry, google Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and that chick that's married to K-Fed).

Basically, For Lovers... is an exciting debut from an artist that - if there's any justice in this world - will have a long, successful career. Get in on the ground floor, so you can mock your less-hip friends for years to come.

Doesn't anybody know about this whole g2p thingamabob? It's pretty crazy, it uses google to search for mp3s, circumventing the need for peer-to-peer networks. I'm not really sure how I feel about it, though.

My Neighbor is in Spin Magazine!

So, the bearded dude on the right hand side, is my neighbor Matt. He's been playing with The Living Things(Jive Records) since the summer and he's probably at Sunset Studios (on The Sunset Strip) right now, finishing up their new album. Matt is one of the best musicians I've ever met, so it's really exciting to see him movin on up the ranks. And this is way cooler than the time Gawker made fun of him in their "Blue States Lose" column.

Opera fans dig the shrooms

Saw this on fark:

"Opera fans 'prefer magic mushrooms": Opera fans 'prefer magic mushrooms'

More than a quarter of classical music fans have tried cannabis while opera lovers prefer magic mushrooms.

They are among the findings of a new study of music tastes and lifestyles by researchers at the University of Leicester.

They discovered that fans of every style of music had taken drugs, with those who preferred DJ-based club music topping the list.

A quarter of classical music buffs have tried cannabis and 12.3 per cent of opera lovers had tried magic mushrooms.

The study also revealed that blues buffs are the most likely to have received a driving penalty.

More than 2,500 people were interviewed for the study, which is published in the scientific journal Psychology of Music.

Fans of musicals come out as the most mild-mannered group, with the lowest level of drug-taking and criminal acts.

But followers of hip hop and dance music are more likely to have had multiple sex partners over the last five years and were among the biggest drug-takers surveyed.

"It comes out in the study that, in these types of music, fans score worse in various behaviours, such as criminality, sexual promiscuity and drug use," said Dr Adrian North, who led the research.

Lemonhead Fever!!!

Well, frankly, I'm a little shocked. The new Lemonheads songs are Baaaadassssss - with a capital "B". I was a huge fan when I was growing up, had all their records, put their songs on every mixtape...hell, I even had the poster for "Hate Your Friends" hanging over my bed.

Like most folks, I discovered "It's A Shame About Ray" and went ape shit for it's delicate, beligerent fractured pop. I also had a HUGE crush on Juliana Hatfield, but that's a whole 'nother story. After "Ray", I bought "Hate Your Friends" their teenage punk rock debut, which became an instant favorite with snotty anthems like Rabbit and Amazing Grace. I think Hate is definitely one the great punk records of the 80s, but most people forget about it.

Also, like most folks, I lost track of Evan Dando during his decade-long drug binge. I had no idea he was ready to launch a new line-up of the Heads - AND WHAT A LINE -UP IT IS !!! Bill Stevenson and Karl Alverez - rythym section for my other high school faves, The Descendents - bring a fire and energy that has been missing since "Come On Feel The Lemonheads". Plus, J Mascis stops by to drop some serious guitar solos. It's definitely an indie rock dream come true.

Check out some tracks on Hype Machine

Check out The Lemonheads on AOL Interface

Great Horror Movie Soundtracks

So last night I watched Let's Scare Jessica To Death which was super-creepy. This is mostly because of the music which is some where between John Carpenter and Jim Croce, oddly enough. The filmmakers never really let the music overwhelm the story, so it's really, really effective.

This got me thinking, what are the greatest horror movie soundtracks ever?

I wanna hear from you out in mog land - but if you say "Dream Warriors" by Dokken I'll show ya the pimp hand, if ya know what i mean.

Swedish Pop Alert!!!

I just got the promo CD for Frid Hyvonen's new CD and it's WAY cool. Most of it is just vocals and piano, which is not something I'm usually into, but this grabbed me immediately. The occasional horn line, back-up vocal or rythm section creeps in and you go "damn, that's a great arrangement". Basically, it's 30 minutes of awesome.

The album comes out on 10/24, so I'm sure you'll hear me speak of this again.

Murfreesboro Mog-Squad

Murfreesboro, TN is one of the music-geekiest places on earth, so it's no surprise that it's found it's way to MOG . Here's the run down on some of the coolest moggers I know (okay, the only moggers I really know, but, well, ya know...):

Bingham is the bass player for Glossary, co-owner of Grand Palace Silkscreen and one of the pillars of our music community.

Henry Daggs is the proprietor of Choir Invisible Records, books shows at a dive bar/strip club, plays country music and LOOOOOOVES noise, grind and dub. This kid knows his shizzle.

Dylan is the guitar player for teenage blues-punks The Kindergarten Circus and one of the hippest 15-year-olds ever. Check out their medley of "Helter Skelter" and "Outlaw Blues", it rules.

Full Throttle Cottle is the drummer for Turncoats and The Punk Rock Party Band. The depth of his musical knowledge is awe inspiring - he listens to some super-weird shit.

Lynn is the co-owner and "freak-folk baromter" at Grand Palace Records. He also works at Sony Music Publishing, proving that not everybody in the record industry is pure evil (Lynn's just a little bit evil). he also owns a three-legged dog named 'Grifter'.

J.J. Glitter actually moved to Athens, GA, to run the publicity department at Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records, but he used to call this city home. J.J. used to DJ with me at An Unzipped Fly, and I gotta tell ya, the boy has some damn good tunes.

Billy is another ex-pat (he relocated to the hipster magnet known as East Nashville) and former member of my old band The Young Livers. He also has the most bad-ass collection of live bootlegs. Totally boss.

I also need to shout out , even though he lives in Smyrna. Cool kid, crappy town.

He gravitates towards the weird fringes of mid-century pop music - exotica, garage, psyche, etc. - and it's all top notch. I've got a TON of weird mid-century music and this guy makes me feel like an Ashlee Simpson fan at an Amon Duul show. I sweat his record collection - BIG TIME .

The Evolution of Music

I just read this rather interesting article about the place of music in evolutionary psychology. Without getting into the whole "creationism vs. science" arguement, I'd like to know what you folks think about the origins of music in our society...

From the Boston Globe:

IF YOU HAVE SPENT any time near a radio during the past couple months, you've probably heard a song called ``Crazy," an oddball R&B ballad about insanity. The track is the result of the collaboration between a singer who goes by the name Cee-Lo and a producer who goes by the name Danger Mouse, and it is absurdly catchy. With Labor Day upon us, it seems safe to call it the song of the summer.

Of course, crooning along or tapping our feet to its loping bass line, it may not occur to most of us to ask why ``Crazy"-or any song for that matter-can so easily insinuate itself into our consciousness. It just sounds good, the way our favorite foods taste good.

But a growing number of neuroscientists and psychologists are starting to ask exactly that question. Researchers at the Montreal Neurological Institute, for example, have scanned musicians' brains and found that the ``chills" that they feel when they hear stirring passages of music result from activity in the same parts of the brain stimulated by food and sex.

As evidence mounts that we're somehow hard-wired to be musical, some thinkers are turning their attention to the next logical question: How did that come to be? And as the McGill University neuroscientist Daniel Levitin writes in his just-published book, ``This is Your Brain on Music," ``To ask a question about a basic, omnipresent human ability is to implicitly ask questions about evolution."

The fact that music is universal across cultures and has been part of human life for a very long time-archeologists have found musical instruments dating from 34,000 BC, and some believe that a 50,000-year-old hollowed-out bear bone from a Neanderthal campsite is an early flute-does suggest that it may indeed be an innate human tendency. And yet it's unclear what purpose it serves. Read More

Wimpy Musicians in Bad-Ass Movies

I've always thought James Taylor was the biggest wuss to ever walk the earth. My oldest sister was a huge JT fan when I was growing up, so I really grew to hate him over the years. And I felt that way until I rented Two Lane Blacktop, the "story of two men drag racing across the USA in a primer grey 55 chevy". For at least one movie, James Taylor was the most badassmuthaf*cka on the face of the planet.

So besides Art Garfunkel in Bad Timing, what other wimpy musicians have made bad-ass movies?

Nashville Rocks Harder Than You Town Part 5: Kentucky is Ohio's Alabama

The New York Post ran a peice on the edgy side of Nashville, that was pretty cool/kinda condescending. They say Music City is "the next stop on the cool people circuit", which I can't argue against..but, uh...I don't know, uh, it doesn't sit right.

If the author was in town this weekend she definitely missed out on one of Nashville's best attributes - The Carter Administration. They play classic, no-frills, indie guitar-rock, the kind of stuff that made the early 90s kinda bearable. They're clever, humrous and productive as hell - God & Country is their ninth release in as many years and they've got another one in the pipeline.

So I've been sitting at work, bored, staring at the wall. Luckily our wall is covered in posters by El Jefe Design. If you live in the DC area you've probably seen his posters for the Black Cat and said to yourself "Damn, I need one of those posters!" If you don't live near DC or TN, then you are definitely missing out...

I went to United Record Pressing in Nashville yesterday to drop off the masters for the Turncoats 45 rpm rekkid. This is the first release from Grand Palace Records, the label arm of the record store/silkscreen shop/recording studio where I work, so I'm damn exicited. I LOVE VINYL !!!

here's a link to the two songs:
http://bawstonsean.multiply.com/music

October 6: Southeastern MOG Party, Murfreesboro TN

So I got jealous of all the left-coast debauchery and decided that Dixie needs to get down all Mog-like and what not. Here's my plan:

October 6, 2006
At 8 pm, Grand Palace Records is hosting an all-ages show with
The Protomen and Slack. The Protomen play grimey, theatrical synth-rock about Megaman (yes, that Megaman) and Slack play anthemic punk (their new CD was produced by Nick [Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters Raskulinecz).

After that the 18+ crowd is going to head across the town square to Wall Street, where I'll be DJing with Nashville's best soul/funk DJ, Doyle 'D-Funk' Davis. D-Funk is a co-owner and vinyl-buyer at Grimey's, the best damn record store in all of Music City. He hosts a weekly funk show on WRVU that has been running for close to a decade. His taste is phenomanal, just ask Mos_Jef, he'll tell ya. It's gonna be DAMN funky.

If any moggers are interested in coming out just mogmail me and I'll put you on the guest list (non-moggers will have to pay, like the chumps that they are).

For More About Murfreesboro, TN

The Protomen mp3

Slack Mp3

Crazy For Leaving

Ahh, Catfish Haven...sublimely soulful rock n roll. I heard the rough mix of this album back in January after they played at Grand Palace. When I got home from my victory lap the finished, mastered version was at the record store. It hits stores on Sept. 12 ...I can hardly wait.

Hummina Hummina Hummina - this is a damn fine record!!! It carries on the gritty rock n' soul sound of their Secretly Canadian debut Please Come Back, but embellishes it with horns, keys and backing vocals. The obvioous reference would be Stax/Memphis soul but Catfish Haven definitely exhibit more depth than your avereage blue-eyed R&B crooners. There are echoes of Gamble & Huff's less indulgent tunes, classic Carolina "Beach Music" and Lou Rawls...can you really ask for anything more? I didn't think so...

The most awesome-est part about the new album is that it's gonna be available on vinyl so I can rock it "dance party"-style. awww, yeah.

Check out the Crazy For Leaving mp3

See them play Please Come Back at Lollapalooza 06.

Catfish Haven's homepage

P.S. They're on tour with Magnolia Electric Co. so check 'em out if you can. Their live show is GREAT .

Columbus Day Weekend MOG Meet Up ?!?

Do you have plans for Columbus Day Weekend yet? If you don't, then you need to come down to Tennessee and party with us.The record store I work at will be celebrating it's one year anniversary that weekend, so we'll be pulling out all the stops - dance parties, rock shows and what not. I'd love to get a bunch of Moggers down here to see how we geek out on good tunes around here.

Plus, Nashville has some of the coolest music-tourist traps in the known universe , and there are lots of super cheap flights and affordable hotels. I think any mogger worth his/her salt will have an awesome time.

Mogmail me and tell me what you think..

As per Ookpik's request, I present you the Bucket City Crew

I feel a little weird about this, because I hate when people plug their own bands on Mog. Then again, I'm not actually in these bands, I just work for them in one capacity or another. That being said, these bands also make some of my favorite-est music ever, so I guess it's okay. And here it goes:

Turncoats Dixie-fried hooligan pop a la the Faces, The Who and The Kinks featuring our fellow Mogger Adam 'Full Throttle' Cottle . RIYL :Chuck Berry, cheap beer, Cheap Trick

Velcro Stars This boisterous indie pop band is playing at the Athens Popfest tommorrow and their debut CD comes out in September. RIYL : Velocity Girl, Superchunk and Superdrag.

Ghostfinger The Village Voice said their surrealist country-metal was "stadium certified", and it's totally true. Catch their guitar player, Richie Ghostfinger, while he's on tour with Bobby Bare Jr. this fall. RIYL :Rolling Stones, Bill Monroe, Slayer

Glossary Rootsy Rock N Roll that's as heartfelt as it is catchy. Their new album came out July 11 on Undertow Music and they'll be playing at the Midwest Music Showcase in Indianapolis on Saturday. RIYL : Drive-By Truckers, Lucero or Uncle Tupelo.

How I Became The Bomb Sardonic Synth-Pop with a comic book fetish. They were mentioned in the new issue of Billboard (in Todd Martens' Indie Retail Column) and will also be at Popfest tommorrow and the MMS on Saturday. RIYL : The Cars, The Turtles, Ian Dury.

Creech Holler Appalachian murder-blues currently on tour in the Midwest RIYL : Doc Bogs, R.L. Burnside, the darkside of American folk music.

So ther you have it, my post-gradution plan for world domination. Let's hope it works out.

I need a range life, so I can settle down

So I'm in the mdist of a minor league existential freakout. I have four hours til I take my last final for my last class and I can't bring myself to study. I'll be receiving my Bachelor of Science in Music Business Management on Saturday (hopefully), and that scares the shit out of me. I'm not really a suit-and-tie type guy, so I can't really see myself getting a job in Nashville's mediocre-music machine, but I really don't want to leave Tennessee.

My best chance for paying off my student loans is to find a a major-label deal for one of the bands I manage. Even if a label signed us today, I wouldn't see any cash for months, since I'm the last person to get paid (being a manager and what not). I don't want to get a "real" job right off the bat because getting a deal is going to be a full-time gig in and of itself and I'd rather not screw that up. I've got a couple of bands that are attracting serious attention right now, but I've never had to actually deal with this stuff so it's a little intimidating despite my education (or because of my education -it could go either way)

Of course, I need a real job so that I can pay all the legal fees and extra bullshit that goes along with becoming a legit musical enterprise (contracts, copyrights, travel, etc.) Plus, there's also the possibilty that somebody more established will come along with a more substantial management deal than I can offer. These bands are my friends so I want them to be as succesful as possible, even if that means handing them off to somebody else...

I'm also freaked out about "The Pink Spiders" and what will happen to the Nashville rock scene if those guys fail. Word on the street is that they recieved close to $2 million in advance money (label, publishing, merch) so if that record bombs...who knows - I'm going to hope that the signing spree doesn't end soon...

Thanks for putting up with my whining...

Van Hunt - the most underappreciated artist of the century

In response to Full Throttle Cottle's post I would like to mention Van Hunt's super-duper-criminally-slept-on debut. I was working in the commuter cafeteria at school when a co-worker, Alex, introduced it to me. Alex and I shared a love of deep soul and a hatred for customer service - he was the only person that made that job bearable. He slipped me a copy of the "Van Hunt" album, which he had been talking up for weeks and needless to say, it was mindblowing. Somewhere between Prince and Sly, with a touch of Gamble and Huff, this album is damn near close to perfect - summer super-jams if there ever were.

All that being said, "On the Jungle Floor" is even better.

Do yourself a favor and buy some Van Hunt records.

Music Critics, Technology and the 21st Century

Did anybody else read Chris Dahlen's new column on Pitchfork?
It's an interesting treatise on the currnet state of media-criticism. I'm not sure if I agree 100%, but I do feel like formal music-criticism is on the verge of dying out. When David Fricke and Peter Guralnick die, all hope is lost...well, maybe.

What do you guys think? Does the digital generation have it's own great critics?

Nashville Rocks Harder Than Your Town Does Part 4: Southern Girls Rock & Roll Camp

If any of you read the recent Pitchfork article. about Rock Camps for Girls, you probably know that BYOP 's Jemina Pearl graduated from one of these programs. What P-fork forgot to mention was that she went to the Southern Girls Rock & Roll Camp.

I've been volunteering with SGRRC for three years now, and I have to say it's one the coolest things I've ever been a part of. Seriously, this is the heart of the Bible Belt and the capitol of country music. It's the last place you would expect to find a progressive, feminist rock organization, but here it is still thriving and still growing.

My friend Kelley started the camp four years ago and it's quickly become a local institution. The staff is a who's who of local rockers/scenesters with TONS of expierience (over a 1000 years of combined expertise!). The showcase is one of the best shows you'll ever see, with all the bands (that formed at the beginning of the week) playing the craziest, most exciting (and excited) music you'll ever hear.

It'll dope-slap the jaded-hipster right out of ya.

I saw the Pharcyde last night and it was awesome. I saw them 11 years and two members ago, at Lollapalooza. Frankly, I wasn't expecting much. I didn't like Plain Rap and lost track of them after that... It was so good that the backpackers didn't get on my nerves.

Nashvile Rocks Harder Than Your Town Does Part 2: The Springwater Sessions

No discussion of Nashville is complete without mentioning Springwater Supper Club & Lounge. It's the dive-y-est dive bar in Nashville and the 2nd-home of some the craziest characters on earth, like Dave Berman from the Silver Jews and Dave Cloud. (If you've ever seen the movie Gummo, you've seen some of the regulars.)

The Mattoid This is one of the best bands in Nashville. They're lead by a Finnish throat-singer and play twisted garage-pop with surreal lyrics...

Asschapel Pummeling metal from Thrashville's finest.

Unknown Hinson Sure, he's not local, but it's a pretty awesome video that captures the vibe at Springwater really well. Plus, Hinson's the voice of "Early" on Squidbillies, which totally rules.

to be continued...

Nashville Rocks Harder Than YOUR Town Does Part 1.

Ya, it seems kinda ridiculous...but Nashville, TN has the hottest rock underground in the country right now. That's why I moved to the area. I spent a couple of days here and decided that it was the only place to be. It's an incredibly exciting thing to be a part of...

I'm going to skip over the major-label bands like The Pink Spiders, Be Your Own Pet and The Raconteurs and stick to the indie side of things.

We Own This Town - This podcast/vodcast/concert calendar is run by Doug Lehman, guitarist for "Nashville's garage-rock titans" The Clutters. Doug has done a great job assembling a coherent vision of a very diverse scene. The newest installment is from a sold-out show at the Exit/In with Ghostfinger and How I Became The Bomb. The other video has Apollo Up , Forget Cassettes and The Carter Administration. Here's the Youtube (you can find the newst installment on Google Video):

Nemesisboy is run by Ben Slack who's been really bored since recording Slack's new record with "Grammy award winning metal face monster Nick Raskulinecz (Queens of the Stoneage, Foo Fighters.)". He mostly makes fun of anyone and anything in Nashville. It's a hoot.

Grimey's is one of my all time favorite record stores. The Staff is great, the selection is awesome and they give out beer after 5 on Saturday's. Here's Dressy Bessy doing an in-store last week:

This video by psyche/punk/blues stalwarts The Immortal Lee County Killers is chock full of NashVegas pseudo-celebrities like Porkchop and Chris "the Alcohol Stuntman" Crofton :

I wasn't going to talk about 'em but upon further reflection: Be Your Oen PET RULE ! I saw them play in a basement last fall and it was an incredible spectacle. Punk rock the way it was meant to be, plain and simple. Some damn cool kids, I tell ya.

And here's some parting word's from Richie Ghostfinger:

Until next time....
