What Singles Came Out This Year?

Posted over 3 years ago
Again, I've been asked to participate in a year-end critics poll and I can't think of any answers. This time I have to figure out the top ten singles of the year, but frankly I can't think of anything that was released as a "single"...Help me out moggers, what were the best singles of the year?

  2. Viva La Britt says Some of the tracks I'm including on my soon-to-be-written MOG post on this topic: Gomez- "How We Operate" The Raconteurs- "Hands" TV on the Radio- "Wolf Like Me"

  3. Sullivan says I second that vote for Wolf Like Me. As uncool as it might be to claim, Crazy by Gnarls Barkley was the single of the year.

  4. mos jef says There are only two songs to choose from. "My Love" by Justin Timberlake, and "Bossy" by Kelis. "Wolf Like Me" is a distant third.

  5. Bawston Sean says My Love and Wolf are definitely on the list. I'm not familiar with the Kelis track, but I live and work in a cave...

  6. mos jef says Be sure to have the bass turned up the first time you hear the Kelis track. And have a dancefloor handy. Sullivan has a point, though... Gnarls Barkley has aged surprisingly well. I'd put my money on "Transformer" but I don't know if that was actually released as a single.

  7. Sullivan says It was a big year for wolfy things. Wolf is Loose by Mastodon was a pretty badass single

  9. Daviso says RN'RPIMP - A Single is radio speak for a lead-off track that will epitomize an album, used as a tool to rope in the listener to make a purchase. e.g like all the hits artist on the grammies work their pop collective asses to promote. They can be a stand-alone track and historically also called an A-side that DJ's can spin and people go "hey" that song rocked with TRT(total running time) between 2-4 minutes. -- I'm working on a list - watch the MOG-sphere...

  10. Viva La Britt says I think the PIMP was messing with us and being facetious, Daviso ;)

  11. ROCKNROLLPIMP1 says i hope like hell *HE* was being factious i have not seen one of THOSE things or bought one since 1975 i think he is LYING!!!!

  14. Bawston Sean says Sales of physical "singles" pretty much collapsed a few years back. Since the use of digital-music has gone mainstream, Soundscan and the powers-that-be have incorporated sales of single tracks into the charts...so, ya, we've got singles here in the states.

  15. Mallory says But do they still sell the physical copy of a single here? I remember back in the day (the mid to late 90's) buying every Spice Girls single I could get my hands on. Has the (physical copy of the) single been replaced by the EP?

  16. Bawston Sean says More often than not, independent bands are opting for EPs over singles and the majors have all but abandoned the format, but now and again folks even put out CD or good ol fashioned vinyl single.

  17. Smooth Hegemon says Might want to file this one under "SH is a raging moron" but... Wasn't Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" released as a single this year?
    Permalink posted 12/11/2006
  18. Bawston Sean says Ya, I live in a bubble and don't listen to the radio or watch TV, so I totally forgot that "Crazy" was a single...I put it in the "things I stole off the internet" categoy.
