Ivylander dropped me note today, just to check in and see if I was okay (he's a good guy like that). So I figured I should post my reply to the ol' MOS , 'cause I've been neglectin' my fellow moggers (except the ones I see all the time). here goes:
Things have been really hectic lately. I took a cooking job about 2 months ago, working with two close friends. Both of the guys are musicians and their bands (Glossary and How I Became the Bomb) are starting gain some serious momentum. As a result, I've been working some crazy hours, on top of working at the record store, trying to kick start a label, blog, and maintain my DJ career (which is hasn't been working very well - who would have guessed that Nashville doesn't really dig afro-beat and boogaloo...?).
Life around here has actually been really frickin good, now that I think about it. Thanks for asking. I've been too busy to appreciate what's going on here in M'boro.
Since my student loans came due, I've been kinda freaked out by music. I owe an assload-o-student loans 'cause I wanted to learn how to make hit-records happen (a Bachelor of Science in Music Business Management...yep, it sure is BS...), even though I haven't listened to mainstream/pop music since I got my short n' curlies...but then, the bands I thought were boring 8/10 years ago are breaking the Top 5 (Modest Mouse, Shins yadda yadda yadda). Needless, to say it's been a bit of an identity crisis for an aging indie rocker - am I way ahead of the learning curve or way behind? Fucked if I know...
It's also been the worst year in the modern era for selling recorded music, so it's been tough to find a job in my field. I've made some very harsh - and very public - comments about the RIAA and the way the major labels are handling things, which might not be helping my situation either. (google's a muthafucker...) Fortunately, my spider-sense is tingling and I feel like (at least a protion of) the industry will be moving towards a model more empathetic to consumers and artists than the current one - an entire industry can only keep it's collective head up it's collective ass for so long...
Basically, I'm living the rock n roll fantasy...I can't really complain.
How have you been?

A repost from our pals over at Grimey's:
Hey y'all,
Just wanna make sure everyone is hip to some fun stuff going on next week.....
In 1969, Vashti Bunyan, with the help of producer Joe Boyd (Nick Drake, Incredible String Band, Toots and the Maytals) recorded Just Another Diamond Day, which is now considered to be one of the top 100 British Albums of all time. She then walked away from the music business and, for the next thirty-years, disappeared into the Scottish country-side to raise her family.
Now thanks to the encouragement from fans like David Byrne, Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Animal Collective, and Fourtet, Vashti is bringing her sublime music to a handful of lucky cities.
Vashti and her backing band and co-headliner Vetiver (Andy Cabic, Otto Hauser of Devendra Banhart’s band) whose record To Find Me Gone inhabited the highest regions of many year-end list get you grooving with the kind of smoky, white soul rivaling JJ Cale.
Vashti Bunyan and Vetiver play The Mercy Lounge on Wednesday, February 7.
For a chance to win a pair of tickets and a limited-edition, hand-made concert poster made by Nashville’s very own Isle of Printing and signed by Vashti and Vetiver. Come around Grimey’s and drop your name in a hat or something that suffices for the mystery and suspense that a hat provides. We'll be selecting a winner next Tuesday!
xoxo,
The Grimey's Staff

Did you realize that you spelled her name "vaSHIT bunyan" in your post title?

If anybody's been wondering where I've been lately (which you probably weren't), I've test-driving Grand Palace's new website/blog - which, by the way, is totally rad. It's kinda like driving a monster truck that was built from 1972 Cadillac Eldorado, but with internet-type-stuff. Anyway, if you wanna check it out:
Tell me what you think!
p.s. the site was designed by the super-rad Micheal Eades.

I thought you were just makin' excuses, but yeah I could spend a LOT of time exploring. I just skimmed the surface, saw a space robot destroy Nashville (loved it when he exploded that stupid whatchamacallit where the indoor football takes place), got to see some cool shows I wasn't at, viewed the top 10 selling records at Grimey's and found that I have recently ordered one of them (the yo la tengo), and that I need to get me some How I Became the Bomb before everyone knows about them.
Cool stuff!
So what is Grand Palace? also who are these Turncoats and How I Became the Bomb?
I never hear anything about these guys and was wondering why is it so underground and hush-hush...More people should write about these guys!
...then again I am so not cool and never in the know.
(also i am completely funnin' ya in case my brand of humor doesn't translate)

Hey Sean, check out what the posterchildren are doing to remodel the music biz. i think their plan needs work but they are the nerdiest of music nerds. Also check-out snocap they among other starts-up have got lots of new models cooking. There are lots of Biz dev music models in works i've spotted out there in the wild. Glad to see you back. I've been busy nose down working other 2.0 stuff and was also surprised with all the new mog toys. Very inspiring. You will find your stride.
FIND OF THE DAY . Live Clash set from 1980, Passaic NJ. I think you should try some rude boy music on Nashville.
i did find time to post dj spork show #17 called the new disco. Working on the next show for this month. later. ~Dave
Hey Sean!
I'm glad to see you here again. I've been thinking about another "this week's groove" but the launch of the new(er) MOG has kept me insanely busy. I hope things for you (and I) smooth out soon. Rad that you have a cooking job. I went to culinary school right out of high school and although I don't work in the field myself, a lot of my friends are in food service. Talk soon.
"Busy" seems to be the theme for 2007.
