FF: Peace Begins Within
-
Artist:

Now 67 years old and little known outside the Christian rock scene, Mylon LeFevre's time in the commercial rock world was not a wholly happy one, ended as it was by serious heroin misuse. In 1970 though he cut his first "proper" solo album for Cotillion Records, produced by Allen Toussaint, which included probably his most memorable song - "Peace Begins Within"
While Allen and the band can sure lay down a deep swampy southern funk groove here, it might charitably be observed that the one let-down on the track is that Mylon himself isn't either the most confident or competent on the old vox humana: and so it came to pass that a much shorter, but rather more convincingly sung version by blind vocalist Bobby Powell from Baton Rouge on the Whit label, which retained much of the original groove, enjoyed a degree of success -
When the tune migrated across the Caribbean to Jamaica, the backing track underwent some radical surgery for a version by one of the unsung great female reggae singers, Nora Dean, who is also herself a woman of strong religious faith. This track was released in the UK on Bullet produced by Norman "Syd" Bucknor
Finally, as a little treat, here is a very rare instrumental cut of the Nora Dean tune - "Love Juice" by Syd's Gang, on which the organ is probably played by Lloyd Charmers or Tyrone Downie
